I had (both are now with my grandson) a "modern" 700 (purchased within the last three years) in .308 (SPS mounted in an HS Precision stock) and .204 Ruger (Varmint weight barrel in factory laminated stock). Both were outstanding shooters (sub moa) once the triggers were replaced with jewell triggers.

I've used the Weaver V-16 successfully - model number 849410. It has 1/4" adjustments, a target dot on crosshairs. It tracks well, has good glass and comes back to zero.

I dry mine in the oven at the same time I dry my brass -- about 200 degrees evaporates liquid off both. I dry mine because I keep it in an airtight container and I don't want mold or other growth...
