Re: Barrel Weight Question

Usually, the practical reason for a custom barrel in small bore is to shift the balance point. But it has always amazed me how well CZ or Anschutz factory rifles shoot with pillar bedding and a little skilled gunsmith tuning. That said, the typical Hunter class custom barrel is a light Varmint or #3...

Re: Leupold FX-3 questions?

I am looking to buy FX-3 25x40 . How does the 50 yard minimum A/O adjustment work for 40 meter (44 yard ) targets? The way I remember it, the original FX3 25x40 would only focus down to 50 yards, but Leupold changed that pretty fast when the community chimed in. Now, they work fine down to 40 meter...

Re: Weaver vs Vortex

I started using vortex scopes 2 years ago and would not change for anything. The optics are as good or better then Leopold or sightron. The target knobs have a good crisp movement. The price when on sale is cheaper than others. The glass is good for the money, but how are reliability and resale? For...

Re: Nosler bullets

When it comes to reloading, I get real literal about the recipes. No substitutions, no guessing, no experimentation outside of min/max boundaries. I make enough mistakes without trying.

Second that! I haven't worked with Pete yet, but be aware that once you go Leupold FX3 25x40, there's no going back.

Re: Reloading question.

Reloading is just like everything else; first you crawl, then you walk, and then you run. This is great information, and these folks really are gurus, but your most important task right now is to just start doing it.

Do not tell me that Al! I'll order two more in different calibers! (Do they have group rates? I'm asking for a friend. :) )

Re: Ripple Effect

I know it will work as a starter rifle but when I consider swapping the barrel out to someting like 7mm-08 a new Savage or Ruger starts to look like a bargin. PTG has a pretty good deal on trued 700 receivers pre-fit with one of their bolts. Yes, you still need to source a pile of parts and have a ...

Re: Ripple Effect

Glen, does Jeanne know you talk like this?! Get a pair of close-out Tikka T3's, have your gunsmith pillar bed them, and top 'em with a pair of nice Leupold's. You've still blown your $1,800 budget, but you're out of the dog house for way less than two custom rigs, and you've got rifles that will tak...

Re: Tikka Rifles

Glen, probably anything in 6.5mm will have just a little less thump than your 7-08, which "just" leaves 260, 6.5x55 (a Tikka favorite), and Creedmoor to choose from. If you go full custom, you can add 6.5x47 to that list. Euro-Optic still has T3's in 260 and 6.5x55 on sale, in Forest and Hunter mode...

Re: Tikka Rifles

Glen, each of my sons bought T3x's in 30-06 for this past deer season, and both rifles were attractively blued, had nice wood, and the triggers were set ~3.5 pounds from the factory. I cleaned and oiled each one, topped them with Talley rings and Leupold scopes, checked action bolt torque, bore sigh...

Re: Considering a new gun case

Most of the information on checked baggage dimensions is published by the individual airlines, typically 62", while the TSA seems concerned with other details.

Re: Why the oddball calibers in high power silhouette?

Bob, several years ago I watched and marveled at Mallory Nichols shooting a Remington 870 off-hand. She was maybe 12 y/o at the time, and she just rolled like willow with the recoil. That was when I knew I could never be competitive at high power silhouette, since I try to stand there and "take it l...
