don't shorten the barrel

Barrels are surrounded by mythology we're mostly afraid to challenge because of the cost, so too often we're frightened into inaction. Fluting may remove 8 ounces from the barrel, but since that weight loss is distributed along the length of the barrel, it will remove less felt weight from the nose than clipping a little more length. Weight in the muzzle has leverage, so 4 ounces off the muzzle may move the balance point on the rifle more than 8 ounces off the length. On the other hand, fluting is just too cool...

If all else fails, remind yourself that barrels are consumables. That can be a strange idea, but never trade or sell a rifle because the barrel is wrong. If the action is solid, alter or replace the other parts until the whole suits you.
