Why not starting the youngster off with a 1712 and a cut down McMillian stock? As they grow just get a new McMillian stock that is a bit longer to fit the growing child?

I've found that a heavy rifle (though light to us adults) doesn't work well as a first gun. Picking a gun hoping they will "grow into it" doesn't always work out as it feels more like work to the kid.
A first rifle "should" be fun first. You can work on the work part later when they feel more comfortable with an "adult" rifle. I've also found they will tell YOU when they're ready for the switch.
