Technical gqestion about barrel length.

Post by squinty_shooter »

Rule 3.1.1 sub e states that the barrel must not exceed 26 inches. My question is WHERE do you start your measurement at the breach end, or the front of the bullet/chamber, or the leade? The rule book offers no guidance and I am getting conflicting opinions. If it turns out to be some "commonly" accepted practice, how do we maintain uniformity or equipment acceptance from match to match. Thanks to all to help clear this muddy stream.

It's measured from the bolt face to the end of the barrel. (See Rule 3.1(g))

Just so there's no confusion, the High Power Silhouette rifle barrel can be up to 30 inches; 3.1 (g). The High Power Hunting Silhouette rifle barrel is limited to 26 inches; 3.1.1 (e). Same for smallbore.

Close the bolt. Insert dowel. Mark end of barrel. Remove dowel. Measure.

That is too easy Chris. You should add a few extra steps to make it more dificult.

So to keep beating this horse, I am relatively new to SB Silhouette. I hear horror stories about "the box". What is it, does it have merit, and how do I make sure my equipment complies with it...
Thanks in advance.

It is a jig to measure your rifle to comply with the size tequirements in the rule book. If you have a standard hunter rifle you should have nothing to worry about. If you have a 'way out' standard rifle you might want to study the rule book.

I double-checked the rulebook and didn't see anything about overall length. Perhaps your acquaintance is mistaken.

The 7 inch rule was the problem for most of the rifles that would not fit the NRA jig.
I think the silhouette committee dropped that rule in 2017.
Tall people who needed long stocks would violate the old 7 inch rule if the toe of their recoil pad continued the lower line of the stock.
If memory serves me correctly the rule was the bottom of the stock could not extend 7 inches below the centerline of the bore.
