O-rings for barrel harmonics

Post by snaketail2 »

At our monthly match I heard of couple of guys talking about using o-rings to fine tune barrel harmonics. The idea is once you find a ammo your rifle likes you can turn it further by using o-rings on the barrel to get the harmonics just right – apparently you place them over the barrel and move the o-rings back and fourth until you find the maximum accuracy spot.
Seems kinda voodoo to me, but...if it works, I'd give it a shot.
Anyone know more about this?

Try Google - Mid barrel rimfire tuners

If you read a dozen of so of the threads that come up you will learn several things.

Opinions vary WIDELY. [-(

If your's (opinion) differ you are an absolute effing idiot.

SOME Rimfire BR shooters are some pretty mean and bitter little people for having such incredibly huge egos. =))

Your mileage may vary yada yada yada..... 8)

We used to travel to the Springdale Arkansas area and shoot once or twice a year, years ago before we had developed or own match schedule at Old Fort Gun Club...They had a large group of shooters and shot 3/8 scale targets at 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards. Targets were pull string resettables. We went up one year and everyone had rubber o rings at various places on their barrels. Tuners, we were told and an incredible breakthrough. We beat them pretty handily with plain barreled guns...went back the next year, no o rings and you had to be a member of the club in order to win any of the prizes...YMMV.

Turners are legal for the standard rifle and they work. They are NOT legal for the hunter rifle.

Buy ammo your hunter likes and then tune hour heavy rifle to shoot the same stuff.

I ran a little experiment shooting 10-shot groups out of my Ruger 10/22 Target rifle with a 0.920 inch diameter factory barrel at 50 meters (the distance I sight-in my small bore hunting rifles), after our silhouette match this Sunday.

The rifle is fitted with a Redfield 4X scope and the groups were shot using a bipod and a rear sand bag. Ammo was CCI Standard Velocity. Used in the experiment were 3, .750 diameter x 1/8 in. thick o-rings fitted together over the barrel at various distances from the muzzle. Results are as follows:

a) No O-rings used - 10 Shot group size @ 50 m.: 1.165 inches

b) 3 o-rings, placed together, 1/4 inch from muzzle end of barrel : 1.320 inches

c) 3 o-rings, 1/2 inch from muzzle end of barrel: 1.020 inches

d) 3 o-rings, 3/4 inch from muzzle end: 1.595 inches

e) 3 o-rings, 1 inch from muzzle end: 0.945 inch :)

f) 3 o-rings, 1-1/4 inch from muzzle end: 1.625 inches :-o :-o

f) CONFIRMATION GROUP, 3 O-RINGS, 1 INCH FROM MUZZLE END: 0.83 INCH. :ymparty:

All shots were taken in a slight breeze, not enough to really affect bullet travel. The rifle was held as steady as possible and I cannot call any shot a flyer due to poor trigger pull or alignment. The use of a higher powered scope would have probably enabled me to shoot tighter groups all around.

Having said that, it was observed that damping barrel vibration with the use of o-rings does have some effect on group size and securing o-rings on the barrel's sweet spot will tighten up groups.

This is advantageous in Standard Class, where heavier barrels are used and tuners are allowed, because the barrel can be tuned to shoot optimally with ammo from different lots of the same brand of ammo your rifle already likes. However, as Kitty mentioned in an earlier thread, you still have to do your part and hit the frigging silhouettes. You will not be able to blame the ammo for your crappy shooting.

Now it's time to try this experiment with this and some SK ammo I bought a few years ago, on my 40X Standard rifle... :-B

A very small movement of the tuner will change the group. My home-made tuner is threaded at 10 threads per inch. 1/2 turn changes it from good to bad. Every gun is different and all factory tuners don't move very far.

In the movie The Big Red One Lee Marvin's troops put condoms on their M1s. I always thought it was to keep the rain out.
Hey, Joaquin I'll be interested to see what you have on your rifle next month.
