Sight choices

Post by Tancred » Sat Apr 08, 2017 9:27 am

I'd like to add iron sights to a TC Contender 22LR barrel (10" older octagon) but need some advice. Which should I choose: the setup from EABCO with a Bomar-like rear and hooded from sight or the Williams Fool Proof with rear blade. Not crazy about taco hold, so was planning on not getting an aperture rear. Also, would the Williams require replacing the factory front sight?

Both have advantages. I like the rail that comes with the EABCO, would make testing ammo a lot easier. But I know the Williams setup since I have them on my rifles, target knobs are an advantage.

What would you choose?

what sights does the barrel have on it now? the tc factory sights are good and will do the job. what i use for iron sight is a williams fp-tc-tk with a merit aperture. for the front sights i use either a aubery adcock or steve martens front sight. with this setup i do the "taco hold". on the scope guns i use 1970/80 model aimpoints with a weaver 92a base. the weaver 92a base is made for the tc and priced better than the eabo ones.

Since posting this I've done some rethinking. I have a red dot and a weaver base, so it seems like I should try that before spending money. But I would like to know if you had to change the front sight in order to work with the Williams, or was it just a personal preference?

With an octagonal barrel your front sight is soldered on. Personally I wouldn't try to change it out. It will need heated to remove then drilled and tapped for a screw on sight then reblued.

If your goal with this barrel is to shoot it standing with a weaver type stance I would use the factory sights. When I started shooting a 10" hornet I was shooting arms out.

I shoot with a taco hold. Williams peep rear with a hooded front. On the hooded sights you can adjust the blade width. I like it turned as narrow as possible. Since I switched to taco hold I have only shot about 3 targets higher than my best with a weaver stance.

Whenever I get a new barrel I slap a weaver base on it with a scope to test loads and ammo. Once I am happy with how it shoots I swap the scope for whatever sight set I want to use.

Thanks for the reply. So I guess the question is, if I do add a Williams, will it have enough adjustment to use the factory front?
