new build - which 6mm for low recoil but effective

Post by shootmore » Mon Apr 15, 2019 6:49 am

Im hearing about the 6mm as a good shooter with low recoil. Im considering building one for my Jr. shooter.
Which caliber and why?

Also selling a very accurate 260 to fund this.

What Evelio said. I have put a couple thousand rounds through 6BRs in silhouette. Although I would go 7.5 twist if you are close to sea level. At 3000’ I get away with an 8 twist. Really, there is zero downside to a 7.5 or even a 7 twist. Once my present 8 twist benchmark is burned up, I would never buy an 8 twist again. There is no good reason to.

29 grains of Varget will give the 105 grainers around 2750 FPS which will take care of CPTs nicely. The same powder charge will give a 115 grainer around 2700 FPS for rams which gives up very little to the 6.5/140s in ram killing ability. I have had great results with the new-generation RBT 115gr D-Tac.

Those are not hot loads, brass will last forever. And your junior shooter will think they are shooting a loud 22LR, recoil is minimal.

You might want to look at the howa mini 1500 in 6.5 Grendel, they make a 20" heavy barrel and a 22" pencil barrel. 123_130 grain bullets at 2550 and 2400 fps

The factory plastic stock typically weight 5.8 lbs and is generous in size for younger shooters, they can be weighted up (epoxy & lead shot) to make weight in hunter or std. Rifle.

Orig triggers can be reworked (1.5 coils off each of 3 springs?) Or buy a timney.

I have one of both barrels and 123s take down rams if hit, recoil is light.

forgot to add, hornady 123 eld factory ammo shoots 5 shot 5/8" groups out of both rifles.

Made in Japan and excellent machining of metal
