Why the uncommon calibers in high power silhouette instead of more common calibers like: .308, .270, 30-06 or 7mm Remington Magnum?

Recoil.. or rather lack thereof.

Recoil and ballistics, the common silhouette cartridges are not uncommon in other NRA highpower sports.

Most seasoned shooters and experimenters agree that it takes a well constructed bullet weighing between 140 and 150 grains and traveling around 2650 fps to reliably take down the Rams. We also want lighter loads, 95 grain to 110 grains, which produce less recoil for the Chickens, Pigs and Turkeys's so not to get beat up. Why do I have chamber reamers for 6.5 BR, 260 Bobcat, 6.5X47, 6.5X55,
6.5 Creedmoor, 260 Rem, 6.5 Panther, 6.5X308, 6.5X284 and 7-08? Because silhouette shooters are a weird bunch and I am one of them!

Once and awhile during some practice I will use my. 338 Win. mag. and slay a rail full of pigs. They go down hard when contacted by a 225 gr. Hornady Interlock or SST. About 25 shots a session is more than enough punishment for me.

Dayuum.... I would guess that a .338 would take down the "stickiest" Ram out there...LOL

And I was thinking that flattening the primers with a case full of R17 and 162 AMax's with my 7-08 was something.....

Bob, shooting that beast off hand ain't so bad. It is a Serbian Mauser action with a Shaw 24" #5 or bigger contour blue barrel. It has a dense Richards micro fit walnut stock with deep Monte Carlo and rosewood cap and grip cap. It is topped off with an El Paso steel 3-9x Weaver scope. This is a classic 60's build about the time the .338 was introduced. It weighs in at a whopping 11.4 pounds, not exactly a decent elk carry rifle. I got a Bianchi Cobra basket weave sling on it, too Despite the total weight, that 70 gr. charge of N160 still causes me to have to adjust my ball cap each shot.

Bob, several years ago I watched and marveled at Mallory Nichols shooting a Remington 870 off-hand. She was maybe 12 y/o at the time, and she just rolled like willow with the recoil. That was when I knew I could never be competitive at high power silhouette, since I try to stand there and "take it like a man" instead of going with the flow. If you can go with the flow, more power to you! I'd just grit my teeth and swear to never do it again...

Ha! I thought I was the only one silly enough to use a .338 WinMag for fun on the silhouette range. I surprised myself at how well I did. And didn't repeat the exercise. I don't want to haul a moose that far anyway.

HEY!! I resemble that remark!

I disagree with the weird part. You want to see weird. Go to the gas pumps, any ball sports park, grocery store, convenience store, truck stop, race track, hospital, a clinic, Walmart, church, a gun show or the work place. You want to see the most normal, sensible, down to earth people. Go to a Silhouette match.
