Individuals who shoot with a 25moa rail I have a question.

Post by DavidABQ »

This question is for those individuals who are shooting with a one piece 25 moa scope rail.

Have you removed any excess rail or cut it into two pieces to reduce weight?

I have a section hanging off the front of my DIP scope rail that is just begging to be removed. I also thought about making it a two pieve by removing the center section near the ejection port.

Who has done it?

Please post photos of the final product.

I wouldn't think you'd want to cut it into 2 parts. It would be much more stable and easily aligned as a single part. If you don't use the front I wouldn't worry about cutting it off.
I buy all my guns from t-rex. He's a small arms dealer.

Hmmmmm, it would be stable but people have had pretty good luck with two piece scope bases.

Hmmmmm, can anyone recommend a high quality Weaver base scope rings made in the USA?

They also have to be aluminum in construction.

David, there are many combinations of scopes, rings, mounts etc. etc. etc.........that will work just fine. IMHO

The best advice I ever received: Find ammo that your rifle shoots well, buy a case and practice, practice. Don't worry about the intricacies, they consume time better spent practicing.

Just my thoughts..............

Shoot well,

Jim

That is great advice but I am trying to cut down on weight to be able to use me favorite steel rifle scope rings.

If you have a good, strong short action, I'm thinkin it doesn't matter. There shouldn't be enough flex to matter unless you are shooting bench rest or maybe 'f' class. On a 22 it doesn't matter at all.

Have you explored replacing the butt plate. There's a lot of weight back there.

It has been replaced with a thin Pachmyer rubber buttpad already. I am coming to the conclusion that I will not be able to use my preferred Warne steel rings unless I go to a synthetic stock.

I REALLY like my wood stock so I guess I need a nice set of aluminum rings that fits a Weaver base.

I REALLY would like a set of Murphy's titaniumn scope rings but that is outside my budget between now and Nationals.

Maybe Kelblys or Harrells can help me out with some aluminum scope rings?

My base isn't a 25 MOA. It's actually a Weaver #81 made for the H&R 360 Series rifles. It is a tapered base with 9 MOA. To play around with a tapered base I purchased this and drilled the hole pattern for my 1712/1710 rifles. I milled out the section over the ejection port as well. It ejected fine without this last step, but while I was at the mill....
Here are a couple of pictures:

If I ever get time, I plan to attempt a tapered base from blank stock. Just to see if I can.

Wow, that is pretty much the same idea I had except I was going to use a Chop saw or Dremel tool to do the cutting.

You did a very nice job!

I'm too shaky too use my Dremel. An end mill in a knee milling machine is much better. A good, coarse file in steady, patient hands would also work.

I wish I had access to a small mill but alas I do not. A chop saw may be a better answer. Thank you for the tip.
