Leupold dot size for 22lr silhouette

Hello all. Looking to buy one of the new Leupold VX3i that is replacing VX3 EFR's when they come out in mid summer ( for small bore silhouette ) . I have read that 1/2 moa dot is preferred as the smaller sized dots are harder to use for silhouette. Leupold states the target dot is 1/8 size ( way too small I am thinking ) so Leupold states I would have to order a Leupold dot .0060 size.

Does anyone use the .0060 sized dot for silhouette?

There is no available scope in my area to look at dot sizes that I can find.

Thanks for your help

Dan

What is .006" in MOA?

I believe its 0.060 inches.
0.060 x 1.047= 0.06282 (at 100 yards) or approximately 5/8 inch.

Or maybe not.... :-\

I would look for the previous VX3, not the new reduced manufacturing cost model. The 0.60 dot is the most popular choice.

3/8 or 1/2 moa. I am not sure what that converts to.

Well, I don't think so, 5 divided by 8 equals 0.625 so maybe we are missing a step.

A 0.060" dot may be a 5/8th dot but that math doesn't get us there. :)

Never could trust math. So what moa is a .006 dot?

That seems to be the question, even setting aside the jumping decimal point. 0.060 and 0.006. LOL

I will keep looking.

I sent an e-mail to Leupold on their dot size vs minute of angle a week ago and haven't heard back from them. I guess it is none of our business to know.

Dan,
The size of the dot in MOA is going to depend on the magnification of the scope. Not sure why they would give you this measurement, but it sounds like 0.0060" is the size of the dot on the reticle if you were to somehow pop it out of the scope and lay it down flat on the table. [strike]If the scope you are talking about is 20x at max power, the MOA size of the dot is going to come out to 20 x 0.006 = 0.12 or about 1/8 MOA. If you were to turn the magnification down to 6x on your scope, the dot would stay the same size but the picture would shrink, and so you'd have a dot that covers 6 x 0.006 = 0.036 or about 3/8 MOA. Anyways, that's going to be a very small dot for silhouette.[/strike]

If you're ordering a custom reticle make sure they tell you the size in MOA, and at what power.
Someone (either here or RFC) mentioned a "dot factor" where you multiply the MOA of the dot by the magnification of the scope. The resulting number should be from about 3 to 5 for target scopes, and about 10 to 15 for silhouette scopes.

Good luck!

Nope, ignore the first paragraph. 0.036" is nowhere close to 3/8"...

When I bought my FX3 25X, the box said 1/2 MOA target dot. But when you call Leupold/Stevens and ask for a 1/2 MOA dot, they kind of pause on the phone and say "at what magnification?". For the fix power that would be easy, but when you have variable power scope, you have to decide at what magnification do you want your 1/2 MOA dot to be.

This brings your scope to be specialized for this use.

On a variable scope with a second focal plane, the dot size does not change when you change power. It does change on a front focal plane variable.

Per Leupold, the fixed power scopes are front focal plane. The VX2 variable is second focal plane, from what Leupold says. They also say that the dot changes size when you change magnification. I myself do not understand that nor notice it. Then again I have way more hours on aperture sights than I do with scopes, so I can't confirm this.
