In my quest for the truth about scopes, I found this:

Just read the first original post and the last post if you are in a hurry.
Not hard to believe that Nightforce is a product of the Japanese and Dutch working together.

I've been shooting Weavers almost exclusively and Japanese glass is top notch. The best cameras all have Japanese glass. Just my .02

I learned last weekend that Vortex scopes are made in Williamsport, PA. by Europtics. At least they are assembled there.

No, Europrics is seller, they may have told you they can ship for repairs. The assembly of a couple of the Razors are assembled in Wisconsin as well as all repairs are done there. And those Razors are the ones that will cost you $2500 and up. Vortex has a presence of sales in Iowa and Texas. All other scopes are made overseas. Someone at Europtics must have had too much of that free beer last Friday.

Leupold scopes displayed at the White House at "Made in America" event, July 17th, 2017.

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/201 ... ica-event/

“It was an honor to represent our 700-plus dedicated American workers and the state of Oregon at the Made in America Product showcase. We’re a fifth-generation, family-owned company that has been manufacturing in Oregon for 110 years”, said Bob Nees, Leupold’s VP of Marketing. Leupold President/CEO Bruce Pettet added: “Leupold & Stevens has called Oregon home since 1907, and we’ve never wavered in our commitment to American manufacturing”.

The "Made in the USA" phrase can mean a lot of different things depending on who is talking.
The question is how many individual components in a product have to be manufactured in the USA to officially stamp that completed product with "Made in the USA"?
I think of the phrase "Made in Germany" the same way as "Made in USA".
German manufacturers outsource to cheap labor countries just like American manufacturers.
Even flu vaccines are outsourced to the cheap labor countries.

A couple of years ago I was asked to photograph a large warehouse facility just outside of St. Louis. The factory there had produced aluminum scope tubes for Leupold - the company had shut down when Leupold moved the manufacturing to China.

I just bought a new, in the box, Leupold guaranteed Gold Ring VX=III scope from China. It went through customs at Los Angeles and passed all the inspections.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. (Is a Peking Duck any different?)

If you bought new in the box Leupold Gold Ring Scope from China it is more than likely counterfeit. All Gold Ring Scopes are made in the USA. You can verify that on Leupold website as well as the Chinese counterfeit problem.

Where did you buy this scope snaketail2? Did you buy it from a Leupold Authorized Dealer?

I am not the 'defender of the Leupold faith' here I just want to know the facts. If Leupold is making Gold Ring scopes in China and tip toeing through some fancy wordsmithing to call them "Made in America" I want to know for certain.

The first two sentences of Michael's reply has the greatest significance. Leupold advertises that the Beaverton, Oregon plant produces all of the scope bodies. Here is first hand knowledge that is not true. Sure, St. Louis is not China but at least some portion of the tubes were contracted out.

Back in the 1980's when I built one race engine after another, an electrician in Kentucky called me and told me that he had to go to a local factory to perform some electrical work. He said he was shocked when he saw thousands of pistons being manufactured and they were not in the Wisconsin plant like they were advertised to be.

I think most major manufacturers "farm out" a lot of work to outside vendors to save the cost of hiring more workers. As long as they out source the work in the U.S. I'm not opposed to it. **==

There does not seem to be much truth in advertising in the rifle scope business.
