Here is the link to the scope I bought: https://www.ebay.com/itm/LEUPOLD-1-5-5X ... 1438.l2649

In the photos the scope does not have the Leupold logo on the left side. But when It arrived it did have the logo.

Maybe it a fake - but it is darn clear and the clicks work properly and it was easy to zero at 100 yards. (Quacks like a duck, walks like a duck...might be a duck).

Beats the heck out of other "Chinese" scopes I've seen.

The factory I photographed was in Chesterfield, Mo. I sill have one of the scope blanks I picked up while I was there...its the body for a 2-7x40 (or maybe 2-7x32).

These are the counterfeit scopes that Leupold references on their website. There is no Leupold warranty whatsoever. You have been had

I suppose "had" is a subjective term. For $66 I got a very nice scope that is clear and sharp. It holds zero, and clicks are positive. I plan to put it on a 10/22 squirrel gun.
If the squirrels complain I'll go back to iron sights.
Bottom line - I've paid more and gotten less. The Weaver brand comes to mind when I think about crappy scoped I've paid a lot for.

Side story: Years ago I was in Hong Kong. A street vendor was selling "Bulada" watches (I was sure it was a knock-off and he just couldn't pronounce Bulova). Bought it for $3 US. Sitting in a bar I looked at the watch - It was a Bulada! Kept time for maybe three days, but provided plenty of laughs on the ship. It was worth the $3.

No you bought a counterfeit cheap Chinese knockoff with an American scopemakers name on it. How do you know it holds zero when it has not been mounted yet?

P.T. Barnum was right. There is a sucker born every minute.

I would like to see the known counterfeit and the real thing disassembled and a side by side comparison made including dinging the gears for hardness. I wonder if anybody out there is crazy enough and has enough money to destroy the real thing for a comparison?

China can produce a great scope if they had the desire. All it would take is to tell them that the Japanese can manufacture a higher quality target scope than they can. It would then become a matter of national pride and the Chinese actually have a lot of national pride in their manufacturing capabilities.

Around 2009 or 2010 at night after a match I talked to a competitor who travelled to China several times a year for business. He told me there were stacks of knockoff Leupolds higher than an American's head for sale in the outdoor markets. IIRC he said he bought 10 because they were like 20 dollars each. He said they held up fine on rimfires but would only last a few shots on a mild centerfire.

I do not care what country a scope comes from or what brand name is on it as long as the windage and elevation repeats accurately, AO repeats accurately, image quality is good, light transmission is good and the warranty is never needed because nothing ever goes wrong with it.

I have a T36 Weaver on my .338 LM and it still repeats. Two V24 Weavers on both my 260s and they still repeat. YMMV.

Sorry, I should have specified that I mounted and shot the scope yesterday. I was testing .22 ammo in my rifle. It held at 40/50/75 & 100 and returned to the same settings a couple of times. It may only last 6 months (the Weaver I had came with awful optics and would not return to "zero" and I wound up giving it away).

I check with Leupold - yes it is a fake. They know there are many on eBay for sale now. I'm requesting a refund from eBay.

But it it still better than a Barska.

I do not share your confidence. I spent a year in China as a consultant to the #1 avionics engineering/manufacturing company in China.

Unless there is strict and heavy handed oversite from an outside company, they find a way to cheese out on quality. Even then they find a way to screw it up.

The Chinese engineers I worked with did not want to buy joint ventured cars because of poor quality control.

Near the city where the Terracotta Warriors were made I passed a large hospital looking complex. It was a sanatorium for military pilots. There is no a similar facility in the US. Want to guess why?

Pretty much everything I saw, buildings, bridges, Chinese built cars, even joint venture cars, were anywhere from less than perfect to pretty shabby.

SteveD,
I do not disagree with your lack of confidence in Chinese manufacturing.
When I posted I was thinking of all the well built Norinco 1911's and milled Norinco SKS that came through one of the gun stores I worked for years ago.

HI ALL ,
Unfortunately between OUTSOURCING and ADVERTISING the TRUTH is hard to find !
I believe that when a SCOPE actually says Made in USA ... then and only then it is ...
NOT ALL scopes say that ... READ closely ! BUYER beware ...

thank you GSL .

Here is a discussion form 2011 on rimfire central about these same issues concerning truth in where scopes are manufactured.
Japan does not seem to have the same rules as USA.

Perhaps it's stating the obvious but, if 'snaketail2', or anybody else, had scrolled down the page of that advertisement https://www.ebay.com/itm/LEUPOLD-1-5-5X ... 1438.l2649 they would have seen the description: - Brand; Unbranded/Generic , and further down the page - NOT Genuine. I guess the vendor made that clear, along with the fact that it is from China?

I'm not going to respond to this any longer. But, I shot a .44 Mag single shot with the fake Leupold shot with. I held up for 20 shots.
I asked the seller to refund my payment because it was a fake. He responded with "keep it - I'll refund the price"
So, not I have a very sharp, very clear, non-Leupold scope that meets my every need.

No it is not a real Leupold, but it is a hell of a lot better than some "American" scopes I've bought. If it falls off the rifle- I'm still money ahead. And eBay is still selling them.
