Will this Leupold work for me?

Post by Merlin »

Looking to buy a scope for the Rimfire Hunter Class rifle I am building. Found this scope - Leupold part #55142 vx-lll 6.5-20x40 scope. Gloss black, side focus, fine duplex reticle - and want to know if it would be suitable for my uses. Would I need to send it to Leupold and get anything changed? The guy is asking 600.00

Merlin, if this is the one I think it is, buy it and don't look back! I think it has a 30mm tube, so it's probably a little heavier and it will take larger than usual rings, but it also has better light transmission. You might want to sent it to Leupold for a check up and nitrogen refresh, which are covered under warranty, and possibly a target dot reticle which is around $70 I think.

And if you don't want it, I do!

Is that the one with the 'long rangr' focus? It must be a primer bump is it is 20-40 power. It should be a real good buy at $600.

No target knobs and I do want the dot rather than the duplex...I think. I don't know if parallax would be a problem....?

It took some digging because this is a discontinued model, but according to this, that model will focus down to 10 yards. I'd like to find a primary source on that, but parallax should be okay.

I am going to take the chance and buy the scope I think.... If it does not work for what I need I should be able to get my $$ back on resale.

OK, got the scope and it looks perfect. But.... Side focus and Fine Duplex reticle and no target knobs...

I really think I need the target knobs... I, with very limited experience to go by, think I like the dot/fine cross hair the best.

Now... Do I send it to "someone" and have the reticle changed and target knobs installed or..sell or trade or .. what...

The lack of target knobs is a surprise. Are are the knobs low, like a more traditional scope, or mid-height?

My older eyes would want more turret, so if you want more you might balance the cost of modification (if available) against the cost of a new model. Whatever you decide, you have a nice piece of glass that should hold value pretty well.

Melin,

Here is a Leupold 5.5 x 20 with a 30MM tube and 40MM objective. I bought the scope several years ago looking just like yours. I sent it to Leupold for them to add the knobs and dot. It is the clearest scop that I own. Not sure about focusing to 40m as it has always been on my high power rifle.

Merlin,

That's how the stock came out of the mold back when Robertson was building the Pharrr RT/s. The animals are decals my wife made me. Did you check the scope to see if it would focus down to 40M without Leupold adjusting the paralex setting?
