First Air Rifle Silhouette Match at ARPC

Asheville Rifle & Pistol Club had our first "official" match this past Saturday!
We have the dates/matches "Approved" last year and this year both, but finally decided to hold a match instead of just a practice match (i.e. no scores kept or reported).
We have 1 set of each animal - so 4 shooters can shoot simultaneously. That's how many shooters we had!!!
It was a "shoot what you brung" match and we'll determine what Air Rifle type it is after the fact, so here I am - asking the experts.
Below is a list of what was used; would you tell me which Air Rifle "group" it falls into?
I've put my guess of all that they will fall into, but again I'm VERY new to all this.

1) BSA Goldstar, .22 (spring piston underlever) didn't weigh it, but likely under the 11 lb limit of Sporter - my guess SPORTER & OPEN
2) Daisy 887, .177, using 70 gram CO2 cylinder - my guess TARGET & OPEN (not sporter even though it is a CMP sporter)
3) FWB 300S .177 - my guess TARGET & OPEN
4) HW 85, .22 cal?? - my guess SPORTER & OPEN
I have an Anschutz SuperAir 2002 SSP (still working on scope attachment), but it will fall into TARGET & OPEN, right?

Would you also tell me the WHY behind which group it falls into so I can tell those shooters?
Thanks in advance for the help.

1. Spring/piston = Sporter.
2. Designed with aperture sights as primary sighting system and shoots at 500 FPS = Target rifle.
3. Designed as an Olympic 10m rifle = Target rifle.
4. Break-barrel spring/piston rifle shooting at 750 FPS = Sporter.
5. Anschutz 2002 was designed as an Olympic 10m rifle and shoots at 550 FPS = Target rifle.

Just about anything qualifies for an Open rifle.

Since I just happen to have this handy on my computer, here are the official NRA rules on air rifle designations...

Target Rifle:
“Any unaltered factory target air rifle designed for U.S. and International 10 meter competition. (i.e., as produced or sold by Anschutz, Beeman, Crosman, Daisy, Feinwerkbau, RWS, Steyr and Walther). Use of scopes or iron sights, including diopter sights is allowed. Any older gun may be brought up to current factory specifications using only factory catalogue barrel weights.”

Sporter Rifle:
“Any unaltered factory sporter air rifle that is or was a catalogue item, readily available over the counter to the general public, weighing no more than 11 pounds, with a scope and mounts. Rifles utilizing pre-charged systems of any kind other than 12.0 gram disposable CO2 units are prohibited.”

Open Rifle:
“Any air rifle weighing no more than 16 Ibs. with scope and mounts. Length of barrel and action measured from the rear of the metal action or air chamber to the end of the muzzle, including any extension, must not exceed 40”. Rifle may utilize any self-contained or externally-charged compressed air system, but such system must be completely self-contained at time of firing. Hook buttplates are prohibited. All air rifles not meeting Rules 3.3(a) or 3.3(b) will be fired in the Open Air Rifle class. The storage of reservoir tanks for either compressed air or CO2 is prohibited on the firing line or in adjacent spectator areas.”

By the way, did you get the pictures of the 2002 mounting options I sent to you?

Greg, you are 100% correct on the classes those rifles fit in.

acorneau,
Yes - I did get your pictures - Thanks. They were a big help. I think I'll go the Burris Signature Zee Rings with the inserts.
Just don't remember if the dovetail groove on the Anschutz is 11mm or 3/8" - do you remember?

Thanks for your responses on the air rifles too!
I saw the rulebook but again in my ignorance I might not know the subtle distinctions between 1 gun and the next!
Question on the Daisy: Does the fact that its CO2 cylinder exceeds the 12 gram limit in the rules cause it to NOT MEET the Sporter category?

Thanks again. I want to help any and all our shooters in all the Silhouette sports they take on!!!

Shootingstar, the Daisy 887 is a Target Air Rifle that would also fit the Open Air Rifle Silhouette rules. The 887 does not meet the spirit and intent of Rule 3.3(b) as in precharged cylinder holding more than 12 grams of CO2 and the propulsion mechanism is not a spring. It does not matter what designation 4H gave the rifle. Think back to the Sporter Air Rifle debacle of around the year 2006 when the Walther Hunter was allowed in Sporter and Open. The Walther Hunter was in reality a Dominator Open rifle in a non-adjustable stock that would weigh no more than 11 pounds. A lot of competitors spent money on that Walther and then the next year it was ruled ineligible for NRA Sporter Rifle Silhouette. Many of the people that spent a good bit of money on those Walthers were angry after that ruling.
Pyramid Air still has a photo of it even though it has not been available for many years.

Congrats on your 1st match! We had the same thing at the tart of our air rifle matches just 3-4 then a few more and I think we got up to 3 relays or more with 2 sets of resets used on good days. I hope to get an air rifle match going here sometime in the future if I can find interest when I hit the ranges again for SB and HP matches.

All,
Where are the websites a person can go, to look at Silhouette-worthy Air Rifles for sale?
I need to pass this info along to my match attendees - as well as potential attendees.

Thanks in advance,
ShootingStar

we'll get this Air Rifle Silhouette stuff really going as time passes. We've had a high attendance of 8 people so far!

For Open rifles: Pyramid Air, Airguns of Arizona, Airgun Depot, etc. The hard part is sifting through all the rifles to find the ones that are appropriate for Silhouette.

For 10m rifles: same places plus Champions Choice, Creedmore, etc. Most silhouette shooters don't want to spend $3K on a Target air rife and go for older ones that are still valid. (FWB 300 anyone?!?)

Sporter: same places as the Open rifles, check the ones that Dustin mentioned for the tried and true.

If you know what you're looking for then you can check the used marketplace for good deals. American Airguns and Airgun Warriors have pretty active classifieds.

All those are good options. Just be careful of scammer listings on the used sites and forums. If they won't call you to talk and have some sort of history be very wary.

The way I have always pitched the expense of a nice 10 meter rifle to shooters is in the cost and convenience to shoot. Nothing is more demanding than a slow 10m rifle to shoot. For the practice it can't be beat no matter what other rifle you shoot at matches be it SB or HP.

I always see the majestic FWB300 springers out there for sale if you don't want to spend the money on a full on PCP setup those are hard to beat. It will still shoot better than 99% of the people that own one.

Once you get the airgun bug it is hard to shake. Going from shooting a 10m outside at 45 yards to a Higher Power FAC type laser will make you want one  I recall the day I let Dustin shoot my Walther Dominator after he had been shooting his Anschutz 2002 10m and his comment about how it was like cheating as he drilled the targets. He bought one soon after :))

As for the Springer it is a great choice for self contained ahooting but it can be finicky if you are not consistent with your hold and follow through. I love my TX200 and it's not going anywhere but it is the last of my rifles I reach for.

If I could only buy one type it would be a 10m to start out!

Hi Greg,
This is Tom sorry that I haven't been shooting any matches but this has been a hard 8 months for me with having had covid 2X and them fell
and broke all my ribs on my right side and i rib broke in 2 places, all that was a lot of pain and 4 days in the hospital. I still have a problem sleeping on my right side but its getting better.
I have an HW 100 air rifle for sale, its like new and comes with 2 cylinders one heavy and the other is Titamine which is only 1/3 the weight of the heavy one. It has a wooden stock and has mags enough to shoot an entire match without having to reload just change mags. It is dead on all the way
out to 45 yards. I am asking $900 for it and I will deliver it to Asheville area or to the club. If someone wants a fiberglass fill bottle I have one that I am
not using that I will sell for $250.00 new over $500.00. I guess by now that I will not be shooting air rifle matches this coming year but WiLL shoot smallbore, already startted practicing. I need to build back my shooting muscles and conceration.
If someone wants to call my number is 828 638-8873.
Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Stay Safe, see you in the Spring.

We've missed you at the matches! Get better and come on back.
I'll pass the word on your HW100.

We will still shoot the Air Rifle Match 1st (9am), then start the practice for the 2 Smallbore Silhouette Matches (Standard, then Hunter).
