Rules re Target Air Rifle

Greetings all,

the Target Rifle is defined in the rule book as follows:

“Any unaltered factory target air rifle designed for U.S. and International 10 meter competition. (i.e., as produced or sold by Anschutz, Beeman, Crosman, Daisy, Feinwerkbau, RWS, Steyr and Walther). Use of scopes or iron sights, including diopter sights is allowed. Any older gun may be brought up to current factory specifications using only factory catalogue barrel weights.”

However, comparing some marketing/catalogue pictures with rifles used in 10m competitions there are differences in some components, e.g., butt-plates, forearms, cheek-pieces, risers, etc. Does it mean that the rifle has been "altered" and thus does not comply with the definition?

If one purchased a used rifle, how does one ascertain if it is unaltered?

Kindest regards,

M

The literal reading would say that anything that didn't come as part of the rifle from the factory would be against the rules (except adding a scope and rings of course).

However, in practical application anything that isn't out of the ordinary (normally used third-party parts) would go unnoticed and most likely not protested. Start adding freaky home-made parts and you'll possibly get called out by someone, maybe not at a club match but probably at a state/regional match.

In a further step back to get "the big picture"... NRA doesn't seem to care about air rifle silhouette, so the only ones who care enough to say anything would be those of us that shoot air rifle silhouette, and most of us don't mind the little details (just the big stuff).

In practice, "unaltered" refers only to the power plant - can't shoot a 10m rifle that has been boosted to shoot the pellets harder.

As far as updating components, adjusting the trigger, making the rifle fit, or adding/subtracting weight, do whatever you want with it. Don't worry about that barrel weight nonsense at the end of the rule.

Hi acorneau, dustinflint,

thank you very much for the replies. I was concerned because the LG300 that I have has an aftermarket butt-plate (10 m legal), and the wooden forearm has been replace by one looking like the one of LG400. It also looks like the cheek-piece might not be original.

Kindest regards,
