Looking for a nice Air Rifle for basement practice.

Post by Jetmugg »

I'm looking into buying a nice air rifle for basement practice. I need something quiet, accurate, and that simulates the feel of a SB Silhouette rifle somewhat closely.

I'm thinking of an older match rifle, something like a Walther LGR or a FWB300S, but if there are other (or better) choices, I'm certainly interested in learning about them. I'm not looking to spend $1000, but I also realize that nice stuff does not come cheaply.

My concern about the PCP rifles is the noise associated with the high power levels that I normally equate to PCP rifles. I don't need a 1000+ fps air rifle that sounds like a .22 to shoot 10M in my basement. I'm hoping for something "mellow", easy and pleasant to shoot. Being "scope-able" would be a defininte plus.

I have heard that the Walther LGR's are more scope friendly than the FWB 300's, so that would probably be my current first choice.

Are there places that specialize in selling 10M air rifles (new or used)? I'm not currently having much luck finding these sources online.

My PCP Styer LG100AZ, with a moderator, makes very little noise. The trouble you'll find with any good springer is I believe they make as much or in many cases more noise then a PCP. A PCP with a moderator is by far the quietest, but unfortunately all good air rifles usually run more then their powder charged brothers.

Go out an look at the different types and pictures at Straight Shooters http://www.straightshooters.com/ or Pyramyd Air http://www.pyramydair.com/ or Air Hog http://www.airhog.com/. There are many, many choices and I have several favorites I'd be more than happy to discuss with you.

I have an Anschutz 8002 that I shoot in my basement. I get just over 10 meters and my Leupold 6.5-20 EFR just barely focuses down that close.

Its a little loud, but nothing like a 22.

Many a pigeon has been schwacked in my hangar by this 8002... If they wouldnt crap on my parachutes and airdrop equipment, I would leave them alone.

for the $

Steve,
If you want the weight and feel to be close to Hunter class, you might want to consider an HW97 or TX200.... I have shot mine in the garage into an old phone book...pretty quiet and can also be used effectively for pest control out to about 50 yds if need be (both are VERY accurate). Make sure you put something substantial behind the phone book if you go this direction....both rifles shoot 900fps+ in 177 cal., Even the big Houston phone book cant stop these after very many shots.
If you have the $, I agree - the moderated PCP is by far the quietest option.....but remember, any of the German/Austrian/Swiss airgun triggers are going to be nicer/lighter than any SB Hunter silhouette gun (2lb min pull).
Also, you will be limited to a VERY short scope if you go for the LGR....the pop-up gate is very restrictive.
Hope this helps,
Brad

For the money you might want to look at a simple crack barrel rig lke the RWS Model 34. If you like that for $200 or less you could always upgrade in the future to a TX200 or PCP. Just make sure your scope is airgun rated if you get a spring gun. If you have not used airguns I start cheap with a good RWS for basement practice and even hunting before you get addicted to the high dollar stuff then its all over from there. Ask me how I know  lol

here are some deals just posted the other day. nice savings on these rifles.
