How fast do I need to send a 200 grain lead round nose bullet to take down the big bore ram at 200 yards? I am using my Henry .357 magnum with a 1:16 twist 20 inch octagon barrel. Thanks Ken

I was able to shoot some different loads through the chronograph this afternoon.

5 rounds of 9.0 grains of 2400 with the 200 grain Magnus bullet. 1203, 1183, 1163, 1205, 1167 fps. Hi:1205, Lo:1163, Ave:1184, ES:42, SD:19

5 rounds of Hornady 180 grain XTP with 13.6 grains of Lil Gun. 1450, 1457, 1476, 1486, 1473 fps. Hi:1486, Lo:1450, Ave:1468, ES:36, SD:14

4 rounds of Hornady 158 grain XTP with 14.0 grains of Lil Gun. 1718, 1675, 1650, 1700 fps. Hi:1718, Lo: 1650, Ave: 1685, ES: 68, SD: 29

The barrel heated up a lot hotter with the Lil Gun loads. I hope the 200 grain Maguns bullet will take the big bore rams down everytime that I can manage to hit one. Ken

HI, KEN,

CAN YOU SHARE YOUR RESULTS AFTER USING THESE LOADS ON RAMS?

THANKS!

To see which 357 mag load that will take down a full sized ram is to c clamp a chicken low on the ram and shoot it. If the load takes the ram/chicken over and does not show pressure signs then you got your load. You are going for 100% knock down. Anything less it is time to get a 30-30.

1600 FPS muzzle velocity ought to do it

So far for me, I've been okay with a subsonic load of 1080 fps.
Simple testing at Raton showed around 90%+ went down with one hit.

Working on a heavier bullet, I'll be testing a 215gr and a 220 gr, version in the next few weeks.

The lead bullets at slower speeds seem to do much better than the jacked bullets, they tend to smoosh rather than pop on the targets.
Probably more dwell time on the target.

I'm also experimenting with a 220 grain version in the 30-30, also subsonic.

not a big fan of recoil and working on loads for my young son.

My 260 38-55 slays the rams without the punch in the shoulder!

I never had a chance to get a good zero for the 200 grain bullets. I was able to get a rough zero just before I shot rams. I had to make sight adjustments as I was shooting. :(( Sadly I only hit 1 ram. It went down without any problems. I do think the 200 grain bullet load will take the rams down. I do want to do more testing with this load before I make a final decision. But from what Jerry (my spotter) said, it was a solid hit and that ram went down.

I had success with your setup using 180 seirra (#8370) at max load.

Mag primers
13.5 grains of win 296

For all else I was using xtp 140s with 16.5 grains of win 296.

Good luck. Build up to max load!!
