I don't suggest forbidding something that's not mentioned nor leaving it to interpretation. Since the leather/vinyl vest is a "pariah", spell it out. For example, don't use words like "heavy". Instead define heavy as a leather vest weighing over two pounds as not allowed.

Instead of adding more verbiage to the rules, why not present a leather jacket to the Match Director, as you are encouraged to do - (3.18 cont'd) The Match Director or Jury shall have the right to examine a shooter’s equipment or apparel. The responsibility shall be upon the competitor to submit questionable equipment and apparel for official inspection and approval in sufficient time prior to the beginning of a match so that it will not inconvenience either the competitor or the official(s).
If your quest for approval is rejected, then nothing needs to be added to or changed in the rule/s, which appear to be very clear as currently written.

You suggest a weight limit - how would it be if I were to use my carbon fiber/titanium "enhanced" jacket, which weighs in at a hefty 14oz? 3.18 still applies!
I jest, I have no such apparel.

My suggestion for verbiage that is definitive is to avoid ambiguity and bias if such a ban on shooting vests made of leather is implemented in LA matches. I like the rules as they are currently stated because some clubs don't have issues with leather shooting vests. When in doubt, asking someone in authority is what should be done.

Ok, I’ve commenced on this before, and I’ll state it here again.
The original rules for lever action did not allow wearing of vests period. At the 2007 fall committe meeting the rule was changed to allow cloth shotgun vests only.
When the 2008 classification books were mailed out there was an addendum sheet stating the change. I wish I still had my copy of this!
The problem lies in that they never put the change in the rule book. I had discussed this issue with Greg Connors and several committe members over the years and it was never added to the rule book.
I bought a Bob Allen cloth vest from Chris Winstead in 2008 and have worn it at every match I’ve shot ever since then. I like the vest just for the pockets. It’s just handier to carry timers, pens, screwdrivers, notebooks, etc.
I have one of the heavy vests also, and there is no way I’d wear it for lever gun. It weighs a ton.

Splitting hairs here but both these statements:

"Clothing that adds stability to the shooting position is not allowed."

"...or anything on the person that would provide artificial support such as clothing having excess padding or stiffening material or which restricts or supports the body in the shooting position may not be worn."

Could both be interpreted to include any footwear with adjustable straps or laces.

and from 3.12(a) ".... that may be considered or construed to be unnecessarily heavy...."

My light weight field vest weights 1.5 lbs. My full leather Hardscabble vest weighs 4.5 lbs. Not a significant difference. I'll put on that much at Thanksgiving. :D
