Early Christmas present

I gave myself an early Christmas today from Cabela's. I found a NIB unfired Winchester Centennial 66 in 30-30 caliber with a 26" octagon barrel. It came with the original box and the factory warranty card was in the box. The paper that the rifle was wrapped in was still in the box. It was priced $699.99 but the manager let it go for $649.99 + tax for $709 out the door. The manager of the gun library said that it was part of a set of 100 guns that was bought from a collector. There are not any markings on the loading gate. I am pretty sure this will be my Big Bore rifle instead of my .357 magnum. Which front and rear sight do I need to get? Thanks Ken

If you noticed that is what a lot of people shoot for CLA. First you'll probably want to find a straight cut (shotgun) butt stock. The weight of the rifle takes a bit of the snap out of 30-30 but a proper recoil pad helps a lot too.I had a gunsmith cut my cressent off and install a nice grind to fit Pachmyer white line pad. If your handy the trigger comes out with the lower tang and is easy to work on. Remove the lever trigger lock for trigger weight and hassle. Sights and if you don't care to reload mine shoots Winchester white box 150gr and Remington 170gr core locks fantastic. Since you only shoot it a few times a year and factory ammo is +/-$15@ box of 20 it really is a easy way to go.

Enjoy!

I might get a slip on recoil pad if I can. I am already set up to reload, so no problems there.
I don't plan on shooting any full power favtory loads at all.

The main thing right now, is to get the correct front sight in the correct height and rear sight.

The front is the lowest or next to lowest 17a, the rear is what ever you want. The reciever has the same mount as a Marlin 39A.

Don't think you are going to find a "recoil" pad that will fit a cressent butt. If you do let me know, I have a Remington #4 clone that needs the LOP lengthened by an inch...

I appreciate the sight information.
I am not sure what I will do about the recoil pad yet. Thanks again. Ken

Sporty: Thanks for the parts numbers, but I plan on using a Williams rear sight and a Lyman 17A front sight in the lowest or next to low.

Cedestech: Remove the lever trigger lock for trigger weight and hassle. Could you please be a little more specific on this. Please make it a little clearer to understand or a link to a video so I can watch it being done.

Where would I find a straight cut (shotgun) butt stock that would fit the Winchester?

What about just having the cressent cut off and install a rubber recoil pad?
Thanks Ken

It's the little chinga that the lever has to depress to unlock the trigger.Just a little slop in the lever and it'll miss it plus it ads to trigger weight.

What about just having the cressent cut off and install a rubber recoil pad? Your wood looks nice. Mine the wood was jacked up around the cressent anyway so it actually improved cosmetics. I'd actually look for a used cressent butt stock in not so nice condition and have it cut and save yours if you resell it later. If you don't plan on it then any quality gunsmith should be able to cut and put a nice grind to fit pad on.
Thanks Ken

Use one of these. Cut a piece of hard foam to "fill in" the crescent shape giving a shotgun type profile. Slip one of these pads on and you can adjust LOP and have a straight butt profile.

xpilot: I looked at them. I am mainly looking for a leather cheek piece. I just posted a wtb ad for a Winchester butt stock. I will cut the crescent off and install a good rubber recoil pad. Thanks for posting the information. You never know when it might help someone else. Ken
