SBCL Dry Fire Practice Targets

I haven't had much luck finding anything in my web searches so I am hoping y'all can give me a hand. I am looking for ways to dry fire practice in between SBCL matches at home. I need help figuring out what scale paper targets would be an approximation to what we shoot at matches so I am looking at a similar sight picture. I am not sure what scale would be a good fit here and what distance they would need to be placed at to be a close match. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Try this https://www.bing.com/images/search?view ... w=729&vt=0

A little net search will produce many choices.

How far do you plan to set up the targets? All you have to do is determine how far the targets will be set and scale them accordingly.

I have a full set of 1/5th scale, 1/16th” thick animals that I have set at 20, 30, 36, & 45 yards. When I can, I dry fire with all three Lever Rifles and I also shoot them with an air rifle set up with a globe on front and a Williams peep sight.

@Snaketail2 Thanks for the link. I have already done the searching and found similar stuff. The issue I have run into with those targets is the scale and set up. I am not sure the distance I would need between me and the target to accurately replicate what I would be seeing in a match. They have been a dead end for me until I can get that piece figured out.

@Dustinflint I would likely be practicing in my living room to keep things quick and easy. I figure 2 to 3 meters between a target on the wall and where I would stand. Given that, is there a formula I am forgetting that I could use (along with some back of the napkin math) to determine the proper scale for the targets? Not too ashamed to admit math isn't my strong suit and would appreciate the help.

@dhatch That might be a good option for outside practice for me, I'll look into a similar set up. I have the room to do something similar in my yard, though for this exercise I am trying to explore indoor options for practice.

Wow, 2-3 meters is going to be TINY! Anyway, go online and find a PDF that you like of some targets that are the correct size for regular scoped rifle smallbore silhouette (1/5 scale - several of these should be easy to find online). Here is the math for 3 meters:

For the ram, 3 meters is 3% of 100 meters and a Lever Rifle target is 2.5x bigger than a scoped target; 2.5(0.03)= 0.075. So the scale of the ram will be 7.5% of a scoped ram target. (Set the scale in the PDF, copy it and paste it into a Word document).

For the Turkey, 3 meters is 4% of 77 meters and a Lever Rifle target is 2.5x bigger than a scoped target; 2.5(0.04)= 0.1. So the scale of the turkey will be 10% of a scoped turkey target.

For the pig, 3 meters is 6% of 50 meters and a Lever Rifle target is 2.5x bigger than a scoped target; 2.5(0.06)= 0.15. So the scale of the pig will be 15% of a scoped pig target.

For the chicken, 3 meters is 7.5% of 40 meters and a Lever Rifle target is 2.5x bigger than a scoped target; 2.5(0.075)= 0.1875. So the scale of the chicken will be 18.75% of a scoped chicken target.

If you use a different distance than 3 meters, just substitute the distance, in meters, into the math above.

Thank you Dustin, this a huge help. Thank you for taking the time.

To help folks who stumble across this post, I have attached a 1/5 scale printable silhouette target to this post that I found worked well for me. You can follow Dustin's advice in order to copy all 4 targets into a single Word Doc for printing or print the PDF at the appropriate scale for the animal you need. Tape the target to the wall, measure back 3 meters for your firing line, and you should be all set.

As Dustin noted, the animals will be small! The bright side to all of this Google-Fu and math is that in theory it should allow for dryfire practice in the comfort of your living room in the same way USPSA shooters enjoy.
