32-20 loads

Post by jnyork »

I just bought this Marlin 1994 CL in 32-20 and will use it for Pistol Caliber Lever Action. Does anyone have a reloading manual that has RIFLE loads for this caliber, all I can find is pistol loads? I intend to start with 100 grain jacketed bullets. Thanks. Jerry

I believe the Speer and Lee manuals both have two sets of loads for the 32-20.

Wow - what luck - I'll trade you. I just got a S&W Hand Ejector m/1905 in .32-20 and all I can find are rifle loads!!! Post your pistol loads if you could - my revolver is hungry.... (And can I say I love that rifle - I will pick one up when the timing is right - it didn't have a twin, did it? )

Here's what I've found so far:

Lyman 47th (Modern Rifle Only)
100gr JSP
Unique 4.5gr 1169fps 6.0gr Max 1476fps
2400 9.0gr 1246fps 11.5gr Max 1700fps
IMR4227 13.0 1720fps 15.0gr Max 1984fps

115gr LRN
Red Dot 3.2gr 1030fps 4.1gr Max 1215fps
700X 2.8gr 940fps 3.9gr Max 1195fps
Green Dot 3.5gr 1045fps 4.5gr Max 1255fps
PB 3.2gr 955fps 4.9gr Max 1295fps
Unique 4.2gr 1110fps 5.5gr Max 1390fps
SR7625 3.5gr 985fps 5.5gr Max 1380fps

Cartridges of the World (Rifle Only)
85gr SP 2400 12.5gr 2100fps
85gr SP IMR4227 17.0gr 2300fps
85gr SP H110 14.0gr 2100fps
110gr SP IMR4227 15.0gr 2000fps
110gr SP H110 15.5gr 2100fps
110gr SP 2400 10.5gr 1700fps[/b][/i]

I also found this link that has a good list of loadings... http://www.leverguns.com/articles/taylor/1894cl.htm

Info is out there, just have to dig. Check on the IHMSA sites although they're not real active. Also, talk to old IHMSA/NRA Pistol silhouette shooters. The .32-20 is a great little cartridge. We shot Hunters Pistol/IHMSA Field Pistol with it, until it was supplanted by the .270 Ren, and the Ren, later by the .22 Hornet. Also, try the little Hornady 100 gr. Plinkers, they are a .30 caliber half jackets. The only problem, you may run into is that a lot of old .32-20's had a .312 bore. the newer ones are .308. We shot some pretty wimpy loads out of the T/C's for Silhouette, but were still accurate.

I use 2 loads for my 32-20 Marlin 1894 CL. 1 for CPT and the other for Rams.

Load #1 (CPT Load) is 14.4 grains of Accurate 2015br with a 90 gr. Sierra HP (.312)
This is a compressed load so if your brass is a bit thicker, you'll have to reduce the charge or you will damage the thin walls of these cases when you crimp the bullet. The velocity on this load is 1423 fps from my rifle.

Load #2 (Rams) is 15.5 gr. of Accurate 1680 with a Hornady 100 gr HPXTP bullet. (.312) The velocity for this load is 1854 fps.

The reason I use 2 loads is that the Ram load is too hot for CPT and will damage the pigs and softer steel chickens.
