Which aperature sight ?

Post by redmist25 »

I just shot my first cowboy silhouette shoot with my new to me Marlin 1894 .45 colt. The eyes aren't what they used to be so I am considering an aperatore sight. Anyone have recommendations on which sight to choose?

Thanks

I use a Williams for the rear peep and Lyman globe on the front.

Same here.. Williams Foolproof aperture rear sight with target knobs and Lyman 17A front sight on all three of my cowboy rifles (smallbore, pistol cartridge, and centerfire).

I have four different rifles for silhouette ( I know, I know, it's one too many!) all of which have the Marbles tang sight and use Lyman 17 a for front. I use a Merit adjustable disc for the rear aperture and that helps quite a bit with my old eyes.

On my Henry .22 octagon, I use Marbles tang sight and a Lyman 17a AMI up front. I use a tang sight because it lets me use pretty much any height front sight. This means you don't have to change the front sight if you can't/don't want to. It also lengthens the sight plane by a few more inches, which is always a good thing.

I may be changing the Marbles tang sight to a creedmore style (if it fits).

I like the look of a Marbles tang sight, but was not about to drill that second hole in my rifle tang for mounting it

Wish they would let me shoot my single shot Winchester .22 in the SB events, it seems crazy to let Semi autos with a tube feed shoot legally and not let .22 single shot period rifles shoot. Another stupid rule, seeing they are letting people shoot with fire sights which is a big advantage to those of us with bad / tired eyes.

What gun are we talking about? If it's a collectible vintage gun I can halfway understand you sentiment.

If it looks like that creedmore will fit, I'm going to just order another receiver cover from Henry and mount the creedmore on it instead of drilling/tapping another hole (or maybe even two new holes) on my existing receiver tang.

Well, neither appear to be collectible in the truest sense of the word, so drilling your tang shouldn't hurt the value. However, if it's resale value is a concern, just order replacement tangs and drill/tap those and when you go to sell your rifles, you can always put the original tangs back on.
