.357 Mag Pistol Loads

Post by NewAZShooter »

Okay, I am looking for silhouette load suggestions for my new .357 mag revolver. This is not a serious competition gun, but just a fun way to get in some range time with the new 6-inch GP-100 home defense pistol. Any suggestions on bullet, brass, powder, etc. would be appreciated. 38 special brass and a light load would probably be fine as well, as long as it'll knock over the pistol targets, (I would think any load would do that with a .38 caliber bullet). But I also want to use a low pressure load if I can to maximize the life of my brass. Maybe a light .38 kind of velocity load in a .357 mag case?

I was thinking of a 158 grain lead safe bullet by Rainier, or maybe a 125 gr. to reduce recoil. I am not set up for casting bullets, lubing, etc. So I am thinking of going with jacketed bullets from one of the mail order companies. I also plan to buy a lever gun in .357 Mag eventually, and it would be convenient if I could try a load that would work well in both firearms for silhouette. But I may be dreaming there.

My questions are:

.357 mag vs. 38 special cases
Bullet
Primer
Powder & load
Suggested dies (& tips) for reloading this caliber or pistol cartridges in general

Thanks!
