new build - which 6mm for low recoil but effective
Im hearing about the 6mm as a good shooter with low recoil. Im considering building one for my Jr. shooter.
Which caliber and why?
Also selling a very accurate 260 to fund this.

What Evelio said. I have put a couple thousand rounds through 6BRs in silhouette. Although I would go 7.5 twist if you are close to sea level. At 3000’ I get away with an 8 twist. Really, there is zero downside to a 7.5 or even a 7 twist. Once my present 8 twist benchmark is burned up, I would never buy an 8 twist again. There is no good reason to.
29 grains of Varget will give the 105 grainers around 2750 FPS which will take care of CPTs nicely. The same powder charge will give a 115 grainer around 2700 FPS for rams which gives up very little to the 6.5/140s in ram killing ability. I have had great results with the new-generation RBT 115gr D-Tac.
Those are not hot loads, brass will last forever. And your junior shooter will think they are shooting a loud 22LR, recoil is minimal.

You might want to look at the howa mini 1500 in 6.5 Grendel, they make a 20" heavy barrel and a 22" pencil barrel. 123_130 grain bullets at 2550 and 2400 fps
The factory plastic stock typically weight 5.8 lbs and is generous in size for younger shooters, they can be weighted up (epoxy & lead shot) to make weight in hunter or std. Rifle.
Orig triggers can be reworked (1.5 coils off each of 3 springs?) Or buy a timney.
I have one of both barrels and 123s take down rams if hit, recoil is light.

forgot to add, hornady 123 eld factory ammo shoots 5 shot 5/8" groups out of both rifles.
Made in Japan and excellent machining of metal

I went the 6mm X 47 Lapua route.
Hornady 105 grainers pushed at 2700 fps for CPT.
Sierra/Tubb 115 grains pushed at 2650 for rams. 32/33 rams hit have gone down. Dinged ram was hit IN low belly near the leg/body junction (in the painful area) lol.

6mm BR
I had some 125gr 6mm bullets made that seem to stabilize in an 8 twist barrel and to do well on rams.

If your into the 125 gr. weight range why not just shoot a 6.5 and do away with the custom everything. Eveyone makes 125 gr bullets no customizing necessary...?

Why would you shoot a maxed out 6mm with a 115gr bullet when you could shoot a 6.5mm 115 gr bullet with the option of going with a heaver load?
Both of the 115s would take the same powder charge. What do you gain?

I always like to experiment, Jerry, and the 115 DTACs are not maxed-out. They would blow up on impact.
I went from AA Class in High Power Hunter, using my .260 Rem., to AAA when I started using the 6mm Lapua.
I guess lower recoil does help.

Could it be you have became a better shot? Might be the comp you are having with Francisco? Na couldn't be it.
There is no recoil difference between a 115 from a 6mm and a 115 from a 6.5mm

No difference IF you use same amount (grains) of powder

Re: new build - which 6mm for low recoil but effective
G'day mate- I have a 7mm Br 1:8 twist and love it fluted barrel in HS thumbhole silhouette stock custom trigger and it is a dream to shoot - 110grn to 150 grn for Chickens to turkeys and 168 n 175 for rams - It was set up to shoot 145 n 175 Double jacked Finn Silhouette projectiles - but Anthony sold the gear and the guy that bought it has not made what Finny did. worst luck because they were the best silhouette projectiles ever.
I love it and it only 29.5 of powders - give just under 2,400 - a friend improved hi a whisker to give a tad more powder and speed but it feels the same.
regards Phill

Here is my question, why not shoot light loads in a .308? Reduced recoil with heavier bullets than a 6mm.

Reduced loads in a large cal rifle are a pain and light short bullets do not have a very good BC.
