.357 or 30-30 or what caliber for Rifle silhouette

Post by shootmore »

Wanted; another LA for Rifle Silhouette so I don't have to share one with the kid. That 12 year old just won A class aggregate at Raton Nationals with our Winchester 94 30-30!

Preference runs to a heavy 8+ pounds, 24" long barrel or more, pistol grip rifle, .357 or 30-30 caliber for Rifle silhouette? Since we have dies, bullets etc for .357 and 30-30 those calibers are preferred but if there is a large margin of group improvement using another caliber we are open to that.
Suggestions?

Will a 357 take down them Rifle silhouette animals? Which is more accurate .357 or 30-30?

Wasted too much time when I started Lever Action trying to get a 375 to work on 200 meter rams. Get a Win 30-30 for about $600 and save yourself the aggravation.

You can use the 357 mag,,,,but it will ring rams and sometimes turkeys. So just hit 20 out of 20 on the chickens/pigs and don't worry about the ringers. Or just get a 30-30 and be done with it.

If you can find one of the older Marlin 336's with the 24" barrel, you will have the hot setup.

What year(s)?

How is the new Marlin MODEL 336XLR 30-30 compare to the older ones? I watched Michael G shoot a 33/40 using someone else's rifle at Raton last week.

30-30 Win.
5-shot tubular magazine (spire point bullets)
Lever action; side ejection; stainless steel receiver, fluted bolt, barrel, lever, trigger guard plate, magazine tube and loading gate; hammer block safety
Black/grey laminated hardwood pistol-grip stock with fluted comb; cut checkering; deluxe recoil pad; nickel-plated swivel studs
24" stainless steel barrel (6 grooves)
1:12" twist rate
Adjustable semi-buckhorn folding rear sight, ramp front sight with brass bead and Wide-Scan hood.
42 1⁄2" long
13 1⁄2" length of pull
7 1⁄2 lbs. approximate weight

My new .30-30 336 XLR SS shoots well. The receiver cover edges are sharp. With little effort, I stripped the heads of a forearm tip tennon screw and the side gate screw. Remington replaced them free of charge. My manual doesn't correctly state how to remove the magazine tube.

I'm a little sorry I didn't get a Winchester Model 94 instead.

I saw A LOT of XLR's at the nationals... they shoot well. I prefer a little more weight with the 1894 centennials but you can't go wrong with either. 30-30 of course. Yes you can shoot other things but you will have limitations.... If you only shoot a couple CLA matches a year you can buy white box 150gr ammo and shoot 2MOA all day and sell your brass. ;)

I prefer heavier, bullets than the .30-30. Less recoil when slowed down. .38-55 can't be beat, if you ask me. .30-30s are too much recoil.

The 38-55 is probably the most ideal round. But finding one under $1500 is impossible.

I occasionally see new in box, 26" Canadian Win 94's selling for $600-700. Pretty good bang for the buck.

I just picked up a new 26" 94 Classic, for a little more, that shoots moa with white box.

You might be able to make one for less. Maybe. Reboring a .30-30 for $250.

Would light loads in a .35 Rem behave similarly?
