32-20 vs .357 vs. .22wmr for silhouette competition?

Centerfires, rimfires, pistol cartridges and everything in between.

Interesting how things vary with guns, conditions, chronographs, etc. I get well over 1100 fps with 4.5 gr of Titegroup (or Bullseye) and a 125 coated bullet in my 20" .357 rifle. 5.0 gr of Unique makes 1200+ fps. Jacketed 125s quite a bit slower.

There seem to be a number of us shooting slow burning powders in the 32-20 and 25-20. Not very 'efficient' in the .32 but accurate for some reason. The unburned kernels fertilize the grass I guess.
WTH is up with that? My wifes 25-20 with 60gr Hornady is the most accurate with 322... I HATE IT.... leaves tons of unburned kernels all in the action...

After this current loading I going to play with pistol powders.... the amount of yellow kernels gumming up the action is ridiculous.

Solo 1000. Smells good and tastes great. Burns clean and cool with a nice gentle recoil pulse in both rifle and pistol. Load it the same as Titegroup with better results.

We will try the .357 loads. And if we get a 32-20 we will try those too.

Just spent time with a Master gunsmith in Barstow CA last week and learned to work the Lever Action triggers. What a difference!
I assume you are talking about Jim Henry of Barstow?

Nicest guy in these parts and best TC guy in the world.

Yep James Henry. Great guy and he is the master.

I just ordered all the gear to do trigger jobs as I have three more lever actions to work on. Compliments my machine shop where my son and I build match rifles, parts and such.

tested my two .22wmr Henry's (24" octagon) this week -one shot 0.600"avg. at 50 yards with Hornady 30gr. (two 5 shot groups in led sled)
and 1.200" avg. at 100 yards with 45gr, Hornady.
Hornady is the only ammo I have and am glad I bought a few thousand rounds last year.
:D

I have yet to test some of the suggested loads in my .357 Win 94 24" Octagon straight stock.
Very happy to have located and purchased a new Winchester 1873 Sporter Pistol Grip, 24" Octagon in .357. Its due in next week. Then we will load for both and test both and see how they do.

If you want a 22 mag, you're pretty much limited to a Henry or a shorter barreled Winchester for the most part, is that right?

Here are the 22 wmr’s that I’m aware of:
Uberti 1866- probably the best for off-hand due to good barrel weight and accuracy. This is what I’d buy if I was to hang my hat on wmr. Limited numbers are imported
Henry - current production and shoot fine I’m told
Win 9422 carbine, Legacy, and Classic. I have a Legacy, but it’s light. Add weight by placing a 7mm tungsten rod in the mag and a chunk in the butt.
Marlin 1894 - rare and pricey

Good luck!

Don't forget Marlin 57M, one piece stock, short throw lever and feels like a full size rifle.

So... Can't address the 9422 but do know they are light.

I have a 1866 Uberti, had a 54M and wife shoots a Henry 24".

The 66 holds like a rock and is surprisingly accurate.

The Henry is very accurate, a little light, has a fantastic warranty and price point.

The 54M isn't for the faint of heart mechanically, if it breaks, you'd better be handy or have a friendly gunsmith.
the 54M also has a very high comb, it's designed for scopes. You'll need tall sights or have thin cheek bones.
They are VERY accurate though.

Thanks y'all. I've seen the marlin levermatics on GB here and there. Henry seems like a pretty 'easy' option. I'll keep my eyes open.

You might consider Vihtavuori powders in the same range, VV110 to VV130 don't seem to leave the unburnt kernels as much as other powders.
