Re: Daydreaming - Marlin Model 57's in .22lr and .22WMR
Picture of the inside of a dirty 57 guts.
Notice the relationship of the sear and hammer, the silver colored sear has a spring that puts positive pressure on the hammer.
You don't want to mess with that spring.
The trigger itself also has a spring, okay to bend that one to lighten the trigger, but it only applies 1.5# of force and doesn't really increase the force between the hammer and the sear engagement.
Notice the slight angle that the sear and hammer are to each other, you want to stone off, a little bit at a time, that angle off the sear only.
You want to clean and polish the hammer surface, but not too much off.
You know when you went too much, the hammer will not stay cocked back, it happens all of a sudden, so go slow and keep checking.
FYI, hope this is useful information.

Those pics are great, Bugfather. That's definitely the best depiction of a Marlin 56/57 trigger group I've seen. It's readily apparent how the sear and hammer fit together and where there's opportunity for improvement.
Thank you, Sir!

Re: Daydreaming - Marlin Model 57's in .22lr and .22WMR
Steve, went to the range yesterday to test out some ammo in my 22mag 57m.
Most did well, but my three favorites did better.
I was only able to shoot at 50 meters, my trigger started to get too light and later that night I made the adjustment of putting the lever safety back into the rifle. Much better now, but a little more heavy.
The 3 types are:
50 grain Federal - 0.420 inch
40 grain Speer Gold Dot (short barrel Personal Defense) - 0.475 inch
40 grain CCI MaxiMag TMJ (Total Metal Jacket) - 0.375 inch
All 5 shot groups, each group required 5 fouling shots, 5-10 mph wind fortunately from my back.
I think the Federal has the best knock down power and fortunately the one I have the most of, always a good performer.
Just based on sound, not very scientific, i think the 57 has a slight edge on lock time.
Good luck with your project,
Thanks, Dennis O.

The CCI 40gr TMJ is hands down the most accurate and consistent in my Uberti before and after relining and T’s Henry. Sub-2” groups at 100 all day long. It “seems” to do better then most, I believe the TMJ transfers more energy into the ram before exploding but as all 22mags… rams will ring…. That 57M you have there is a hummer.

Thanks Emmett, I'm hoping and expecting that my other Marlin 57 and 57m will do the same.

Re: Daydreaming - Marlin Model 57's in .22lr and .22WMR
I have not yet taken delivery of a 57M (It's supposed to ship tomorrow), but I've already laid in a supply of ammo, including
CCI 40 gr JHP
CCI 40 gr TMJ
Federal 50 gr JHP
Winchester 40 gr JHP
Hornady 45 gr "Critical Defense"
Hoping to get the rifle sorted out (will need an inner magazine tube, which needs to be fabricated) and have all the ammo testing done before shooting it in its first match.

Thank you, Dennis! By the way, those groups you posted above look great. They also give me an opportunity to re-hash the old joke "What's underneath the dime"?

Your 57M truly is a hummer. You’re going to enjoy shooting it.
Looking at the trigger, I think you could do JB Weld trigger job to set the sear engagement.

Jack First has many parts for the 57 and 57M looks like a tube for $24.
You can ask them if it will fit your rifle.
Thanks, Dennis O.

Re: Daydreaming - Marlin Model 57's in .22lr and .22WMR
Thanks, Dennis. I checked on that previously. That's an inner magazine tube for a .22lr version, but won't work for a 57M. I just bought a complete inner and outer tube setup for a Marlin 783 off Ebay. It's not the same length as a 57M, but at least it's for .22WMR. I'm hoping to be able to adapt the 783 pieces to work on the 57M. If not, the goal will be to fabricate a .22WMR inner tube from the commercially available parts.TheBugFather wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 10:37 pmSteve, check this out:Jetmugg wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 10:57 amTheBugFather wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 10:02 am I’ll check around for in magazine tubes for you.

Re: Daydreaming - Marlin Model 57's in .22lr and .22WMR
I shot a 52/60 and 48/60 with one recently. It's run like a sewing machine for 5-6 years.
I've done nothing to it but add sights. The trigger, while certainly typical of a factory .22 from 50 years ago, breaks the same with every shot.
I think I've just gotten used to it. Lord knows if I made it a little lighter, I may pick up a couple of points.
