High Power Calibers...
Looking to possible start to build a HP gun, my question is though what are the calibers that are used the most and which ones are also the most cost effective?

The 260 is great, but you have to load it really hot to take rams down consistently. The 7/08 is great also but a lot of the folks are going to the 6.5x47 Lapua, the cases are more expensive than the 260, but it is practically a one time investment.
My advised is to buy 400 or 500 cases of whatever caliber you choose, and rotate them around every time you reload, they will last almost as long as the barrel will.
Remember if you go to the Nationals, you will need a minimum of two hundred rounds per rifle, unless you want to reload at night, instead of having fun with your friends. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HA...I knew it!
Mary, you were wrong on this one. Huey, it was just three weeks ago that Innocent and two of her Italian co workers were over my house for elk steaks on the grill. The Italians brought over a couple of bottles of their favorite wines to have with dinner. Some time during the evening they were teaching my wife how to swear in Italian while Mary and I were BS'ing about guns, silhouette and stuff like that. Then we started to talk about Steelchickens and all the goings on here. I say to Mary "I bet it is just a matter of time before Huey gets the itch to try HP". She says no way will he get into HP with not a range anywhere near Florida.
Come on in Big Guy, the waters fine. The Savage will do as a starter gun, but go with the 7-08. Much cheaper to shoot overall and delivers more whoop ass where it is needed.

Bob.....never said there wasn't an itch there, just when the costs really start to roll out, he's gonna find it a bit more expensive. He has shot my Mexican so BH....6.5X47Laupa, only way to go boy! That way when you run outta ammo you know you can bug jjp or myself.
Yes, the WOPS were working on trying to get Sara to tell some good jokes, there was something said about needing to bring more than two bottles next time!

It was only time
, I had to see if/ how my parents approached this traveling around idea, since I have no real HP range locally. I think it's between the 260 6.5x47 and the 7-08 right now. The only plus of not having a HP range is the fact that I can slowy stock pile supplies lol and you say the savage is a good starter, but is it atleast a good enough action to build off of down the road too?

A 6.5 shooting a 142 gr bullet at 2650 is not a hot load.

Huey, Sportsmans Warehouse has a sale on NOW, they were blowing out Rem 700 SPS 7-08's for $319.00 ea. Then throw in a $40.00 Rem. rebate makes them cost $280.00 Two of us bought six of them yesterday, all they had. I think they have Florida locations. A 700 will last you a lifetime if properly cared for.

Jerry,
I know BH....and the nickname is appropriate for the waddling duckling. I was not referring to a hot load, I was referring to some constant fiddling and other manuevers that young waddlers make that
can get them in deep shit when playing with explosives. The 700 action will save his butt. He is going to change it anyway, that is his nature, so start with a stout action.

No Sportsmans Warehouse in the whole state. Do you know where I could see the sale, website or ad, that way I could try to get Dick's to match it!

Re: High Power Calibers...
Pat, it is very possible that it was a local sale. The rifle/scope combos were on sale for $319 and one of our local stores had 6 of them. I bought two of them along with a Remington R15 to play with (my first personal AR platform). I couldn't pass it up for $799. These sell for $1,150.00 regularly.CZforlife wrote:No Sportsmans Warehouse in the whole state. Do you know where I could see the sale, website or ad, that way I could try to get Dick's to match it!
Here is our local flier that has the sale prices. Maybe you can show this to Dicks Sporting Goods? Also, Dicks themselves have some good sales on R700s regularly.

We (I) thought that we were also going to get another $40 off with a rebate but it turns out that the rebate was only for the SPS models and not for the ADL. As far as I can tell the ADL and the SPS are the same rifle. Regardless, $319 for a Remington 700 in 7mm-08 is a great deal. I wasn't incredibly impressed with my last new R700 I bought at the beginning of the year and promised myself that I wouldn't buy anymore of the current production (hence my switch to Savage), but at this price I couldn't pass up the deal. I asked the guy behind the counter how many they had and when he said six I told him that I have friends that might be interested. Within an hour our group of silhouette shooters had cleaned them out. Mine will sit in the box until I either burn out the barrel in my current hunter gun or I dream up a rainy day project.
Personally, I am switching brands to Savage. I feel that their quality has surpassed Remington currently. The Remingtons that are on the market right now are very rough. You have to buy a CDL or BDL to get a smooth operating action in a R700. I don't think you would be giving up anything by going with a Savage.

Re: High Power Calibers...
They wanted $579 for the basic stainless steel model, wouldn't match anything that wasn't local and the choices in calibers were garbage. 243 and .270 no 7mm08 or 260Rem
Will have to resort to seeing what basspro has
Lastly does a Florida concealed weapons permit allow you to walk out with the rifle the same day in other states aswell??? I do have 750miles of road in front of me about a week from now!
This whole high power idea is hitting the fan fast.
