Stainless steel tumbling media?
After scouring the interwebs looking for info on progressive reloading presses, I had read about this stainless steel tumbling media on several sites. It sounded like a good way to ding up brass that I want to do precision shooting with, but I can't find any bad feedback on it (except for price) out there.

I don't intend to buy the setup now, as I'm saving my pennies for a progressive press setup. It did make me wonder if anyone here has used this system before and had an opinion. Anyone?

WOW, no more cleaning primer pockets! I may have to give it a try. But what to do with my free time...

To bad it doesn't work in vibratory tumblers.

Yep, but if that does really work like all those reviews linked on that site say it does, it would be worth buying the tumbler and media so I could get rid of the vibratory tumbler, four bowls, and tons of media that I have now.

Problem, I use the tumbler to remove the resizing lubricant from my cases like alot of people do, stainless steel is a poor absorbent!

Re: Stainless steel tumbling media?
The stainless media is used in a rotary tumbler in a solution of water and detergent, which would be what would dissolve the sizing lube and carry it away once dumped out. With this method, the water gets tossed instead of corncob or walnut media in a vibratory tumbling system. The brass and stainless pins gets rinsed clean afterwards. In the video, the guys says that getting sizing lube off takes a max of 20 minutes.

Interesting concept, I've washed cases in the washing machine in a cloth bag, worked pretty good, not a hit with my wife though!

Other than initial cost investment I haven't been able to find a bad side to it. There are a few people out there trying to say that it will work harden your brass but I think this has been proven to be untrue, or at least the effect is so minimal that it is insignificant. It does seem like a little more work than a vibratory tumbler. The upside to that is that you virtually never have to buy new media.

Re: Stainless steel tumbling media?
Yeah, I think it would be a little more work with the rinsing/drying, but never having to buy media or brass polish since the detergents can all be bought at Wal-Mart would be cool. I think I could tweak his multi-rinse process a bit, including having a very fine collander that I could just dump brass, media, and all through as a first step and then separate brass and media with the media separator that I already have. I'm wondering if taking the primer pocket cleaning step out would offset the bit of extra labor involved with rinsing and if the drying step would take any longer than the extra tumbling time that I have to do with the corncob or walnut now.

I talked with him today...he has run a batch ignoring the owners manual (typcial man), for half the suggested length of time, and putting brass in on the first run (not correct according to the manual) and the brass has come out mostly clean....except for the black 'off the range' stuff he found, and that was in a stage of pink, which apparently all of the brass goes through before finishing.

Re: Stainless steel tumbling media?
Jason, I just came back from Phoenix where I shot the AZ Cowboy State Championships. One of my friends showed me the stainless tumbling media and the tumbler, explained the process to me and I was very impressed with the results. The brass he had cleaned looked better than brand new brass. I will be looking into buying a setup for myself in the near future.Jason wrote:After scouring the interwebs looking for info on progressive reloading presses, I had read about this stainless steel tumbling media on several sites.
