What scope to buy?

Tactical-store aka opticsplanet....just sent the big sky scope out. And, I did see them advertised for the 569.00 price on amazon..sil reticle. My sense is that the reps may be guided to give higher prices when not in stock though that need not be the last word. This is particularly true if you can say it is being advertised as such.

I just recalled that the last scope I bought on sale..a WEaver...was broken on arrival. Replaced immediately, but
I was lucky to get a higher end supervisor on the phone. And, a friend had a Sightron scope ordered. It too was broke on arrival. This does not inspire confidence. No fun going to the range, dumping a lot of ammo only to learn it really is the scope and not the shooter.

Earlier, someone said to check with Chicken George. I can tell you, he would have saved you $$$ on the Sil model over what you paid at Optics planet. Maybe close to $80.00 delivered to your house. Amazon's price is lower b/c the scopes are SII 6-24x42, Not Sil model.... Sometimes Sightron has a $75 rebate on their SII scopes. You will find that your new shipped Sil model will last you a long time. The only downside is the factory has no reticle interchangeability if becomes an issue with the fine dot and crosshairs with the Sil, which I do prefer. You will have optics that are outstanding with elevation repeatability at all distances.

I checked with George a month ago and he stated that he did not carry Sightrons anymore as their CS had disappointed him. Double check with him to make sure. His price on a VX-3 6.5-20 EFR with custom dot reticle is $750 to your door. Tough to beat that.

Chicken didn't get back with me soon enough. Not his fault. I was in the mood to get the decision over, seeing a price just above my price range. Chicken was dismissive of the sightron for CS as stated earlier. I don't doubt him. For 200.00 more what does vx model from Chicken offer in comparison to the big sky sil model..besides better CS. Not arguing, just would like to be better informed. Unfortunately, a new scope is not in the wings for me...still, I'm curious.Might help me to better judge strengths and limitations of the big sky scope. As for the reticle..size of dot and extra dots I can see as advantage but would that cost me more on the base price?

A scope is a personal choice based on an individuals eyesight. Beyond that the mechanics and reticle choices are what needs to be selected for silhouette. As for CS, I can vouch that Sightron has been fantastic and if Chicken George has had issues with CS, then maybe there is a personal problem on his part. Leupold has also had some great CS, but I have also had some very marginal CS with them. Weaver has been ok, but not great, so go with what you are comfortable with.

Correct on the personal issues. A few months ago, I sent my Sightron back to the factory with an issue I was having, only to tell me nothing was wrong. They were absolutely right. The ocular lens got out of adjustment and I was to dumb to recognize. On one occasion I emailed Sightron for a replacement scope allen wrench. Another occasion I emailed them for a free hat. All items came within 2 weeks. The first thing I did when purchased their Big Sky, was get it registered on their website. My experience has been exceptional with Sightron's factory. Some days are good and some days......experience is not so good.

One thing to love about Leupold is there willingness to change reticles at a reasonable cost. I have two Sightron Big Sky scopes with fantastic glass and great range of focus, but their mildot reticles are distracting, and so far nobody is willing to change them.

As for the reticle, I'm getting the sil reticle..no mildots.

Just came back from the range. I have a new cz 452 sil model..which has been discontinued. NIB.
I put a sightron scope on it, 3x9..40mm, S I model. I previously had this scope on a 452 16inch barrel. My fav.
Aquila super exta sv. Winds 8-15. Covered range. Almost 2lb trigger.

I struggled with getting a good sight picture without it partially blacking out. This was my first time shooting offhand and scoring. Used a 50 yrd nra target at 25yrds. 222 with only 1x.

I had it dialed down to 8 for better ER. The constant need to re do my head postion didn't help my shooting.
The rings were low warne. Will signature burris fit? I have a high pair. BKL's will go on the anschutz, but I don't think these rings will fit a cz>?

Then I used an anschutz 1712...8oz trigger. Weaver V. 6x16. same ammo. The sight picture issue, same story.
Rings are high Burris signature. Score lower!: 192, 2x. My other excuses: end of day fatigue, a few surprise shots after using a heavier trigger wt, and this expensive rifle does not extract well. So many report empties just dance in the breech and Anschutz turns a blind eye.errr!!!

On the better side of scoring: sitting down(field position): 234, 7x.

Any references on how to best use/mount/ look through a scope for a consistent sight picture? I would have thought that methodical trial and error would be good enough. Maybe I need to practice this more at home before going to the range.

I can't live with this. RFC has a link to a diy fix but it's not all that easy. At least, not to me.

I would suggest your indoor range has very poor lighting. Suggest to them if they could upgrade their lighting to full brightness. Some indoor ranges can be pretty dingy with lighting. In low lighting, eye relief becomes an issue.

This was outside with sun almost straight up. Sun/lighting is a variable in all this.

I don't use the sun shade on my Sightron so can allow the most light possible. My scope is adjusted, so when I shoulder the rifle my head/eye is right there at the proper scope eye relief distance. No eye/head fishing around required. Sometimes canting the rifle will throw things off in trying to see and your moving your head around rather than correcting the cant. I do cant my rifle when shouldering and have the scope canted in opposite directing so crosshairs are perfect vertical and horizontal.

Sounds like you just have to make some fine scope adjustments so your head is not moving all around trying to see through the scope. You will find the right scope eye relief distance.

Not to thread jack but... What is up with that? I have 2 54's, both older single shot, dual extract bolts and both eject well. I actually have a shooting routine where I cup the action with my off hand,
open the bolt and let the shell bounce back down into the action, push a finger on it, it sticks to my finger a inch or so abouve the action then depending on the range I am at I either flick it forward or
put it in my vest pocket or spent shell cup. Why so many problem with some annies not ejecting?
