What are your favorite........
What are your favorite cleaning rods and solvent?
My favorite cleaning rod is a Montana
X-treme rod but I have noticed the handle does not spin as freely as it did new. It feels like a bearing going bad to me.
Maybe it is time for a new rod.
I am still trying different solvents. The newest one is the rim fire blend from Bore Tech. I have used Hoppes #9 and Shooters Choice so far.

I don't mind Boretech rimfire blend, but nothing has worked like the Pro X has for me.

I only use Tipton carbon fiber rods now, as they work great and I never have to worry about having one be slightly bent/bowed and have it rubbing without knowing it. The bearings in the handle rotate great. For bore solvents, I use several of them across my rifles. For my target 22lr rifles, I use Bore Tech Rimfire Blend for two reasons. First is that it works well for cleaning a rimfire rifle that has had target ammo run through it. Second is that I won a bottle of it at one of the silhouette matches so it's free. If I hadn't won this and tried it, I'd probably just use Butch's Bore Shine like I do on most of my other rifles when I'm not trying to remove a lot of copper fouling.

This topic is right on time. I'm looking for a new cleaning rod and rod guide. I've been using the pull through bore snakes for a long time and they seem to be doing the trick. However, I think it's time I tried using a cleaning rod again.
I was just wondering if anyone knows of a GOOD rod guide that will fit both my Anschutz repeater and my single shot?

I use a bore/rod guide from Champion Shooter Supply. They must call it an Anschutz bore guide. I like the fact that it uses the bolt release to hold it in place. It snaps intp place and stays there until you depress the bolt release.

Definitely. I use a bore guide specific to the action I'm working with anytime I'm cleaning a rifle. The brand of bore guide varies by the one that was best to use with that action. I do have multiple Possum Hollow guides.Doodaddy wrote:Are you using a bore guide with the rod?

Oh good. There are so many shooters that think since they have a carbon fiber/fiber glass/coated rod that they can just ram the rod down willy nilly.Jason wrote:Definitely. I've read good things about those Tipton rods. Is yours "whippy" in flexibility or is it pretty rigid? I've seen some reports of the rods shattering, but I can't help wondering what on earth they were doing to put that kind of force on the rod.

Re: What are your favorite........
I am starting to think that some of these gun cleaning solvents are little more than snake oil. So far I have used Hoppes #9, Shooter's Choice and BoreTech, Rimfire blend.
The Shooter's Choice seems to have some ammonia in it but it performance on my 1712 doesn't seem to work better or worse than the other two.
I actually use ATF to get the lead/carbon off the front of the cylinder on my S&W K22 Masterpiece. It works better than anything else! I even have some of the lead remover from Shooter's Choice to try and get the lead off.
I think after I use up the solvents I have on hand I will go back to Hoppes #9; it is cheaper than these other solvents and doesn't seem to work better or worse than anything else I have tried.
