Dry fire Anschutz 1712

Post by gregw72 »

Has anyone ever called Anschutz to get the definite answer on dry firing your 1712? One part of the webpage says use a spent case (http://jga.anschuetz-sport.com/index.ph ... %25E1%2510 while another area says the Match 54 action is designed to not allow the firing pin to contact the breech face (http://jga.anschuetz-sport.com/index.ph ... &sprache=1

This is a great question. So, there are at least 3 ways I know you can dry fire your Annie.

1. Use Dry Wall screw anchors.
2. Use a spent shell, but be prepared to use a rod in case the shell gets stuck.
3. Purchase a dry fire pin for the 54. http://www.champchoice.com/store/Main.a ... tem=001227 or http://www.anschutznorthamerica.com/parts.html

We opted for 2 & 3 for dry fire and have actually used all 3.

Thanks for the info. That helps.

By the way, I just got this email today from Anschutz:

Greetings Mr. Wilhelm,
The rife design is such that the firing pin does not contact the breech face, thus it is possible to dryfire and not cause any damage to the rifle.

That said, if a person is going to use this as a form of training, then you would either change out firing pins for one specifically made for dry firing or use an empty case to soften the impact.
Even though the firing pin will not contact the breech face, you are still causing substantial metal to metal contact, and at some point you will damage the firing pin. The metal parts are designed to not cause damage when dry firing on occasion, but it is not designed for repeated use.
s.

The firing pin at CC does not list the 1700 series in the description. Is this the correct part number? Thanks!

so the only inconvenience there is with the DF pin is that you have to take apart the bolt to replace the FP. However, if you are going to DF daily, then it really is not a big deal. Just make sure you keep the live firing pin in your rifle case or make sure you swap it out before a match.

I would not do the dry firing pin. Guaranteed you would be on the line one day and click. click. click.

Buy wall anchors from home depot. For pennies each you can dry fire safely and not screw yourself over.
I buy all my guns from t-rex. He's a small arms dealer.

I use the drywall screw anchors. They are a lot easier to extract than a spent case if one should get stuck. I did have one instance where the "rim" came off and the body of the anchor went down the barrel. Other than that, I've dry fired on these things thousands of times and spent less than 5 bucks for a pack of a couple hundred.

Confirmed. That is the correct dry fire pin. I'll post a picture soon comparing the two.

On another note, could someone please post the size of the drywall screw anchors. I think they are yellow, but are all drywall screw anchors color coded by size?

Yes they are yellow, yes they are color coded. Just bring an empty 22 shell to verify size if you are worried. I think I paid something like $2 for 50?

I am not a construction guy, so I was hoping that was true. Thanks for the confirmation.

As I have said before, I think dry-firing is a very, very, very bad idea. I think everyone should practice much more and always use high quality rimfire ammunition (hint, hint) and lots of it!! :)) :)) :))

I agree... I just wished I was good enough to get sponsored in ammo... /:)

Until then, I'll have to just practice safe dry fire.

Waverly is good enough, or will be in a few years to get an ammo sponsorship.
