Considering a new gun case

Post by DavidABQ »

I am considering a new gun case for my 1712 silhouette rifle for various reasons.

What is the preferred case among my fellow silhouette shooters here?

Hard sided cases? Aluminum or polymer construction? Any particular favorite brands or models?

Cloth construction and again any favorite brands or models?

Learned the hard way that baggage-handlers take aluminum gun cases as a personal challenge. The airlines have their own special repair shops just to fix them. New cases made one plane trip and, after doing their job, had to go through a major overhaul. I vote for beefy polymer cases along the lines of Pelican. They can't knock the corners off a case that has no corners.

Questions?
Are you using it for local transport to your range?
Airline travel?

I have two SKB cases; a single rifle for one rifle and a quad-rifle for multiple rifles. They have both been beat to hell all over the place, including airplanes, and have always performed flawlessly. I highly recommend SKB.

Local transport to and from the range; even when I go to Nationals I drive. With the target turrets on my scope an I have trouble with the idea that a soft sided case will protect them. I also like the idea of cutting foam and sticking all of my magazines in the case with my rifle am less likely to forget them!

My current case is a Boyt case for two rifles and to be honest it is on the large and heavy side when 99.7% of the time I only have my Anschutz 1712 rifle in it.

The single rifle version of the Boyt case does not seem to be much smaller compared to the two rifle model.

Dustin, I will have to look and see if any of the LGS has an SKB case sitting around to fondle.

Aluminum cases get beat up by the airport baggage handlers? scratch that! If I ever decide to fly out for the Nationals at Ridgeway I would like my rifle case not to be destroyed.

Any other suggestions?

Cabela's usually has at least the SKB single rifle model so you can check it out there if you have one close. If you don't have one close, come to the Louisiana smallbore state match at the end of March and you will be staying right next to Cabela's!

I use the pelicanish Cabelas knock off. Its made for 2 guns but my first foam is just for the one gun.
There's a Cabelas here in Missoula Dave, come up for Iron Man and check it out!
I buy all my guns from t-rex. He's a small arms dealer.

David,
I have found the Plano Airglide Rifle Case to be a good choice for local transport. It holds a scoped rifle in a vertical position at a very good price. http://www.planomolding.com/hunting/har ... otgun-case

It is not for airline brutality. :-) ............................Jim

I use the air glide case, I had to cut the middle foam down a bit so my high scope setup (max height for hunter) would fit. Even then it barely fits.

If you are just going from your home to the local range, Cabellas has a nice hard case.

If you are going on an airline, Pelican has the best.

I have noticed an overwhelming preference for hard sided cases. That tells me that my initial inclination to go with a hard side case is serving me well.

Thank you gentlemen.

I use the Midway Heavy Duty Scoped Rifle case for my CZ-452 and TX200. Good padding in a simple soft side case.

I haven't flown anywhere with rifles yet but if/when I do I'll probably pick up a Pelican case (or a good knock-off).
