"New" lever gun silhouette challenge

Post by snaketail2 »

I’ve been thinking about introducing a new silhouette challenge. But, before I invest brain-power or spend valuable “coulda been fishing or shooting”-time I wanted to ask the form if there is any interest.

In a nutshell the new competition would use Pistol Cartridge targets at CLA distances (50/100/150 & 200 meters/yards). Rifles would have an exposed hammer and be lever action, pump, falling bock, rolling block or break action. And the big thing – scopes up to 7 power (or a variable scope taped at 7 power or less). All shots made from the off-hand position. Then the same 2 ½ minutes, binocular spotters, round or flat nose bullets, and the same hit-classification as Lever Action (Master = 37 to 40, etc).

FYI – You can buy a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5x20 for under $70 on eBay. Delivery takes a while, as it comes from China. Mine came yesterday and looks super – clear and sharp and the rings were included…just the thing for a new shooting sport!

Interested in a new challenge?

Why not limit it to 3X9 scopes. I think everyone has at least one laying around already. Even the expensive Leupolds are only $200.

I think it sounds like fun and keeps a few more folks shooting as their eyesight deteriorates.

I would limit to pumps and levers but what do I known? You could limit scopes by simply following the scoped bpcr rules (3/4" tubes, 1" lenses, nonclick external mounts). There are some higher (10x) scopes but they get pretty light limited so the physical dimensions limit them more easily that using a magnification limitation (which is easily faked in some cases).

Personally, I think there should be a scope class NRA LA game with all three cartridges. But I said that out loud once and nearly got scalped. I'm not sure why folks got so hostile about it.

Michael,

If you don't mind our stealing your idea, we may try this as a side match at the Sooner Classic in September. I'll run it by the competitors and see if they want to give it a whirl.

Thanks for the awesome idea.

It sounds like it would be fun. Oh and Master Class is now 35x40. I hate that they changed it.

Why bother to fake it when the Leupold factory is in China. The paperwork is all there and it sure looks like the real thing! (I suspected it would be a factory 2nd, but it appears to be a real McCoy.)

Jeanne: Go for it, we need a beta test and I thing Oklahoma is the ideal venue. I have more info I can send.

And, "what PC will take a 200 yard ram" - I've seen 25-20 take full size rams, should not be a problem taking a Pistol Cartridge rams at 200... maybe a .22LR will be challenged, but a scoped centerfire should have no problem.

How about we call it "Hunter's Rifle"?

With the auto resets we have here in Oklahoma, we should be able to run through a side match pretty quickly. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Hunter's Rifle sounds like an appropriate title.

I think this will be fun and useful for attracting the average Joe Hunter to the matches.

We do that already here at the the Los Angeles Silhouette club (LASC). We use our open sight or scoped 30-30 type rifles on the the 50 to 200 meter 1/2 size animals. We are primarily a handgun silhouette club, so we have 1/2 size animals already at our range, set up for 1/2 size pistol for many years. I like the idea, but maybe a lower power scope. I'm hoping that more people will come and visit us this and next year for our State match.

What pistol cartridge will reliably take down full size rams at 200 yds?
I can personally vouch for the 44-40 loaded with 240 grain comercial hard cast (magma mold, crimp groove to meplat distance same as 200 grain 44-40 bullet, not the 240 gr keith-type) bullet over 23.5 grains Re 7--a SAAMI safe 44-40 published load e.g., Alliant powder manuals of early 90's and R. Lee's 2nd ed. manual, and much discussed on several forums eg CAS city, Cast boolits, and Marlinowners by John Kort aka w44wcf or w30wcf and others-- gets around 1365 fps or better from a 24" bbl (Uberti Iron frame Henry in my case)

The Original poster wanted to use the pistol cartridge targets (not full size targets) at 50, 100, 150 and 200 yards.

I do have some 200 grain lead Magnus bullets for my Henry .357 lever rifle that I will be trying on the 200 yard full size big bore rams.

A new Lever Action Silhouette game – proposed name “Hunter’s Rifle”

This is an overt attempt to draw more people into the sport, add an additional match and introduce optics to the Lever Action sport.

My proposal is simple:
The shooter can use a scope up to 6 power and Pistol Cartridge rifles to shoot Pistol Cartridge targets at 50, 100, 150 and 200 meters/yards.

Cartridges allowed: A rimmed pistol cartridge with flat nose bullet muse be used and include these 25-20, 32-20, 38’s, .357 magnum, .38-40, .44-40, 45 Colt, .22 Magnum, .22 Long Rifle. Lead or jackets bullet may be uses with round or flat nose bullets.

Rifles allowed: Traditional Lever Action Silhouette rifles and non-traditional rifles using pistol cartridge calibers may be used – as long as they have an exposed hammer and may be single shot or tube fed. Must be Pistol Cartridge caliber, may be rebored or relined. There is no weight restriction. Rifles may be lever action, pump, semi-auto, falling block, rolling block or break action. Any length barrel may be used. An exposed hammer is required. Any safe trigger is allowed.

Sights: Scopes up to 6-power may be used. Variable scopes that have power greater than 6 are permitted if the scope power is taped at a setting of 6 or lower. Any reticule may be used. Scope mount may be no higher than “see-through” scope mounts.

Stocks should be in “traditional” form, no thumbhole or “adjustable” stocks are allowed.

Scoring is the same as other silhouette programs. Any target that does not fall is counted as a miss.
Master Class 37-40
AAA Class 31-36
AA Class 25-30
A Class 15-24
B Class 0-14

All firing position are shot in the off-hand (standing) position. A spotter may be used and the spotter may use binoculars to aid in scoring.

There will be a 30 second “ready” followed by two minutes to fire five shots. Shooting vest are allowed, slings and shooting gloves are not allowed.

Ties are handles in the traditional manner.

Michael

Most of the silhouette shooters already have a spotting scope. Why not give them a choice of using either a spotting scope or binoculars?

snaketail2 wrote: Fri May 18, 2018 2:12 pm Shooting vest are allowed, slings and shooting gloves are not allowed.
Is that the heavy leather vest that we use for silhouette or a light weight mesh vest?

If you allow the use of a silhouette vest, then why not allow the use of a spotting scope?
