Here is one that is going for a little more (in my opinion) than market price right now.

For that price I would go with the Henry Frontier in either the 20 inch or 24 inch barrel. Even with sights the Henry is cheaper. At marlin owners group they have the manfacture dates of all Marlins rifles. You can print the page.

Ken, will the .357 ring full size rams like the .22 Magnum sometimes rings half-size PC rams?

You need a heavy bullet for the rams in .357.
There are some shooters that are using the .357 with sucess on the rams.
I have some 200 grain Magnus bullets that I want to try. A 200 grain bullet out of a 357 magnum for knocking over a full size ram at 200 yards is really close to pushing the limits of a .357 magnum.
Since I had my .357 Henry, I decided to try it first instead of buying another rifle and everything else that is needed for another caliber.

Sporty:
I tried the one gun with a 357 when a first started out. Don't waste your time. Work up a nice load for your 357 and use it for PC only.
Chk/Pig/Trk 125gr Reiner RN with 12.5 gr of IMR4227
Ram 150gr Reiner RN with 7.5 gr Unique
Some guys are using the 125's for the rams but I couldn't get mine to fly right so I went with the 150's

For my pc loads, i am using Hornady 125 grain XTP with 5.5 grains of power pistol. It takes the pc rams down. I will probably get a 30-30 eventually for the big bore animals.

The .357 will work on the CPT but not the Rams no matter what you toss at them. If you just want to rack up some scores in your book thats fine but don't expect to win any matches with it.

If finding a gun for your son is the goal, I'd suggest something besides the 39A. It's a big heavy gun. I have a nice 1958 39A and I actually shoot better with my 9422 and henry, which are lighter guns.

There's a 1948 39A on the Phoenix armslist that was posted today.

$825 Will buy mind..... It has a find light trigger pull.... a Lyman 17A on the front.... and a Williams Target sight on the rear... Groups great at 100 Meters .... Good balance ...Not to pretty to look at.... just a run of the mill 1954 Model... It got me the NRA National Championship Trophy in Small-bore in 2007.... Wouldn't take less for it.. A good 39A is well worth it.... Keep looking,,, one might come up at a good price... Mind is worth it to me and ready to go.

So it has gotten better in the last 11 years! Good, cause parts for old rifles are expensive.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
