45-70 caliber

Post by Ken Green »

I am curious if any one has shot the 45-70 for the full size animals? Is it accurate enough for the rams and will it take the rams over at 200 meters?

Yes and Yes... question is do you have the lead in your pencil to shoot it.... it's a fairly stout chambering. I have seen one guy shoot it but he is built like a brick poop house with a low center of gravity.... it doesn't look "comfortable"....

I shot a match next to a young man shooting a 45-70. I don't know if he, or his shoulder, enjoyed it, but the blast from his rifle was very distracting to me.

I shoot a 45-70 and recoil is no worse than my 30-30 and I don't ring any rams. I load fairly light but bullets are big. Load is 13 grains of trail boss with a 350 or 405 grain cast bullet. Rifle is a long barreled Marlin 1894. Cheap to shoot, and fun.

Many people shoot the 45-70 with good success. Just don't buy a carbine and you'll be fine. The heavier gun doesn't kick as bad as you would think.

I have been shooting a 45-70 marlin xlr for several years now. With 17 gr of trail boss and a 300 cast I have yet to lose even a marginally hit ram. Recoil is really pretty mild with that combo. As far as accuracy goes, I have had great results. Definitely need the extended elevation screw in your Williams sight. About 140 clicks between chicken and rams.

We have the Louisiana state lever rifle match coming up on the 1st weekend of December. I am going to shoot my .357 Henry for the PC and big bore match. I will have some 200 grain bullets loaded for the rams. If the 200 grain bullets take the big rams down, I will stay with the .357 magnum. If I rang more than I knock down, I will get a long barrel 45-70. Thanks Ken Green

Ken,
Think about a 38-55. Mild shooting, accurate, easy to load for, and never failed to take a ram.
