I knew an A class shooter who would sight his rifle for turkey distance. His equipment was a Ruger .22 bolt gun topped off with a Tasco 3-9x scope which he kept on 9x. The ammo was inexpensive high velocity. As I recall, he would aim for the chicken's feet, pig's belly, dead on for turkeys, and just a hair over the ram's back. Believe it or not, he was very competitive in A class.

Maybe this is how "hunter" rifle really should be! :)

So I just got back from the match and decided to let you guys know how it went. As I stated this was my first real match, and I must say it was extremely addicting and a whole lot of fun.

I was using my custom 581 with a BSA 6.5 x24 scope I found and am already looking to replace it!

I shot : 6 chickens
5 pigs
4 turkeys- I started at the turkeys first and I was actually quite nervous because in practice I wasnt able to hit any of them!
1 ram

I must say 16 was pretty good, although I feel I could have done better by changing two things: Length of pull on my rifle, and having a scope with a dot.

The other competitors where strangers who turned into friends by the end of the match, it was really cool to shoot there annies, in custom stocks and top notch triggers.

Now, if only I could get a hold of an Anschutz, maybe selling my Rem 581, and some other stuff haha!

Congrats, and welcome to the addiction. Just as you said, I got started by showing up at a match where I didn't know anyone. A few matches with those friends later, I was selling off other guns that I never shot to buy a better silhouette rifle and scope. :)

remlija...welcome to the addiction, and don't worry about the equipment, it will get there eventually. I shot iron sights for almost 20 years, and I'm still addicted. Congrats on a 16 that is a great score for starting out.
