What is it about the 7-08 that invokes such fear in people... Perhaps it is the vicious and nearly unbearable recoil ....?

708 - THE best caliber for HP Silhouette
Lesser calibers are available to those who squat to pee.....

The bottom of bottom lines is thus, this is a winners circle O, right here, if you want to find your ass standing in it you will be shooting some sort of 6.5, name a national, regional,or even a state match that was won with something other than a 6.5 within the last 10 years. I have seen several Texans in the winners circle, mainly from El Paso and the Houston area. While I shoot a 6.5, I have to admit to squatting to pee afew times, but it had nothing to do with the caliber that I shoot, it was because I was under strict Doctors orders not to lift anything heavy, if ya know what I mean.

dated my ass. Wildcatted in the 70's, legitimized in '80. I just got home from firing 180 "dated" rounds today, 135 last Tuesday. Maybe another bunch this Monday. What has "dated " got to do with performance? The reason 6.5 is more popular is the flock follows the leader on cartridge choice. They let others make choices for them. There is no doubt that the 7-08 is superior at tipping rams than any 6.5 round.
I have attended many matches at many different ranges and have seen MANY rams stand with good hits from the various .264 cartridges. The 7-08 is not a good round, it is a great round.
Drink the cool aid Glen, you will not regret it.

Bob thank you, you just made my point. 308 and 708 were very popular cartridges in the 1980s, if my math is correct that was 30+ years ago. Things have changed. In general, the 6.5 round has better ballistics, and is softer to shoot. There are many, many, good cartridges out there both 30 cal, 7 mm, 6mm, that can be used very successfully, but there are many reason why the 6.5 is used more than 7-08. We have much better bullets and powders than 30 years ago.
Sorry but the numbers at national tell a different story than the one you are reporting. Ever cartridge can and will lose rams from 6.5x55 to 7-08. None of us load hot enough to never lose a RAM. We all load to the point we can take "most" rams. I have attended MANY matches where every cartridge the RAM stand. Energy on target is energy, the 6.5 can generate as much or less than the 7-08.
Bob sorry change happens and you have seen it. If we never change high-power cross the course would still be shooting 308 ( 223 today), service rifle would still be M14 (today ar-15), IHMSA would still be shooting 7rocket, 708, 7tcu, 6.5tcu, etc, in unlimited instead of 7br, IPSC would still be dominated by 45 instead of 38 super and 40 S&W.
I do not want any to think that I am saying 708 is bad, it is not, nor should you run right out sell your 708. But if you are just starting out, 708, 308, should not be your first choice. Take poll on this board I am willing to be most everyone here shoots 6.5 something.

I tried 300 Whisper at Zwolle 2-3 years ago. Subsonic 200g and 240g bullets. Interesting experiment. We (almost everyone there) shot all of the 200 rounds I brought. It was a total failure. We had fun going pfft, pfft, pfft. But as a serious load it was tough as the trajectory and drift made the window very narrow. You might could get it to work with a 110g bullet going fast.........or neck it down to 6.5 and shoot 123's......a 6.5 Grendle light....

But I meant it in the nicest possible way! It's a good thing.
Bob, you're right about the 7-08 as a go-to factory available caliber. Oldest Boy and I went out to shoot mine and that's the last I've seen of it since deer season opened. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration since he did bring it back for ammunition and cleaning. So far he's taken three with it at 100-150 yards - but my freezer's still empty.

no disrespect or otherwise intended. I think BB and I were on the same wavelength..........sorry it appeared otherwise. It was tongue in cheek humor. I firmly believe in alternate lifestyles, whether it's 7-08, 6BR or 6.5 or anything else. Variety is what's cool. Like Merlin and I talked about today, ya never know when you'll find the magic bullet. Since I tried the 300 Whisper, I thought I'd chime in with actual data.
Happy New Year y'all!
