Re: 300 blackout
Its kinda funny reading all the piss and vinegar in this thread. My HP rifle is a 308 since thats what I own and hunt with. This GAME is supposed to encourage folks like me to get out and shoot with what we own, not to be made fun of for not spending a ton of cash and shooting the latest fad cartridge. Just makes me shake my head....

Well put Old Ranger. I have promised my self to stay out of these goofy debates, but I responded to the original question because I have met Glen and I thought I could steer him clear of a lot of headaches. I only recomended a 7-08 because that was one of the calibers he mentioned he was interested in.
I bite my lip reading the posts from the " you have to have " crowd all the time. If we all had the same caliber, stock, barrel, trigger, bullets, ect; we'd be Nascar. We'd be going around in circles and not going any where. Now don't get me wrong I'm not against someone stating their opinion on thier equipment; it's just that your best stuff might be junk in someone elses hands. No too people are built the same and that makes equipment set up an individual preferance.
As far a calibers, what difference does it make what the guy next to you uses? I lots of times in our winter matches shoot my lever guns. Yeah, I don't stand a chance of winning, but my scope guns are not set up to shoot with a lot of clothes on, and I just want to get out and have fun.
We will always debate calibers, just try to think why you shoot the caliber you do, and remember that the equiptment didn't win the match the shooter did.

Wayne Gretzky said it best "100% of shots not taken do not go in the net".
Translated to silo speak "100% of rams not hit do not fall over, regardless of the bullet".

Let's see something like this was just in the news, oh yeah Phil said something and a crowd of peter puffers didn't like it so they wanted him to shut up, well hell boys and girls this is still the good ol USA, and people can post or not post read the post or not read the post, agree with it or disagree with it. One more thing to ruffle a few feathers instead of expending energy on a silhouette post, why not take that same energy to the range next match and help your match director do something! As far as Mr. Ring, from a few posts ago about the .25 caliber for silhouette and this post, there are no free lunches in HP silhouette, if there is it hasn't been found, but if anyone does let me know!

Of course Phil said he would treat every man with dignity and respect no matter what. He was just stating that it was his interpretation of the bible that it was a sin and they would not get into heaven. Not everyone has the class to be respectful even to something they find distasteful.Jim Beckley wrote:Let's see something like this was just in the news, oh yeah Phil said something and a crowd of peter puffers didn't like it so they wanted him to shut up, well hell boys and girls this is still the good ol USA, and people can post or not post read the post or not read the post, agree with it or disagree with it. 300 Blackout for silhouette
I tried Pat's in Zwolle and was able to clip a few chickens. When shot at the pigs you could see the bullets being lobbed down range hitting way before the rail. I wonder what the drift on a 220gr bullet going that slow is at 550 yards? Perfect for dusting hogs with thumping power at close range and fast follow ups I would say. Silhouette, not so much..

Re: 300 blackout
I always wanted a 257 Roberts to hunt coyotes with and an occasional deer. I traded for a kimber Montana and thought why not try Silhouette because it's what I'll be hunting with and what better practice than Silhouette. I have a new relative that has access to many wild hog hunting places and the 300 blackout looks like a very good hog hunting round. I know both are not ideal silhouette guns , especially with a 6x scope that i love to hunt with. The inquires are to make sure I'm legal and don't violate any rules or get lectured off the range. Neither cal. is suitable for 500 yard shots at game animals, but I KNOW if I see a good shot at a coyote at that range I'll probably try it and what better way to get to know a hunting rifle than shooting silhouette. Al Foust has answered many "stupid" questions that my wife and I have asked about lever action shooting and favorite loads. Outside of hunting squirrels and rabbits as a kid, rifle competition is new to us and I can honestly say we have just now learned how to hold a rifle in competition.

I like your thinking....that kind of familiarity with a rifle/cartridge out to HP distances for sure don't hurt the confidence factor.glen ring wrote:I always wanted a 257 Roberts to hunt coyotes with and an occasional deer. I found some old reloading manuals and they list several reduced loads for several cartridges using 4759. Two of my old manuals list a load for a 308 using 4759 and a 165 grain bullet at 2000 fps. I have now abandoned the blackout idea and will start looking for a 308.Thanks for giving me the info. I continue to learn. We will see you in Raton.

Re: 300 blackout
Glen, 308 with 4759 will work fine for CPT. You will need to shoot a heavier bullet at full speed for the rams. Many years ago when I shot a 308 I used 190's (ouch). Today I think I would try the Sierra 175 MK. Al

Shot a 308 for season or two...168s made me flinch, so i ended up with 155 horn Amax. Shot a few 155 sierras but at the time Hornadys were cheaper. shot one load across the course...didn't lose any more rams than with 168s. Did 180mks for ONE match.. oh hell no, don't want a ram that bad. Powders were H4895 and Varget.glen ring wrote:Al

Better yet...neck the thing down to .284...150mk @ 2450-2500fps, mild on the mind---easy on the shoulder---predictable in all kinds of weather.
