Sierra 6.5mm 140GK on rams

More expensive to feed, but worth it.

Sierra 6.5mm 140GK on rams

Post by fwt1712 »

I've picked up a bulk lot of Sierra 6.5mm 140GK at a good price and am hoping to use them on rams out of my 260Rem.

Has anybody used these and will they work ok?

I am running with 41gn H4350.

thanks,
Nigel.

ps tried 139 Lapuas at the same time and they didn't want to work - approx. 3" at 100m (whereas the 140 sierras were on or under an inch). Note that this is through a 700DM magazine since in Australia Hunter class has to feed through the magazine and I suspect I was just too far from the lands (also using 42gn H4350).

I do not know about game kings, but, I shot 7 out 10 rams this weekend with 140 grns match kings. I would assume that unless the game kings break up on impact, they should work fine.

I test 140 match kings by shooting from a bench and hitting the rams mid and low belly to see if the bullet could topple the ram. The bullet pushed the ram straight back and off the stand everytime. 36 grains of varget, federal match primer, remington brass.

The 140 game kings will work fine if they will group for you. They will be a close match to the 140 MK. The 142 Sierra MK and the 139 Lapua are about the same length and you may have trouble stabalizing them with your barrel twist. And as you suggest the jump to the lands may be giving you some problems. The first 3 or 4 factory 260 remingtons I had would shoot the 120 and 140mk but the 142 was to long if you wanted to shoot it out of the magazine. It just didn't shoot quite as well as the 140mk. The same with a factory 260 savage it just liked the 120 and 140 just a bit better. At one time you could get sierras in a 155 grain matchking that had the same ogive as the 140. You had to back down a couple grains of powder and usually go to a slower powder like 4350 because abut half the bullet was in the case. You may want to try going to a bit faster powder like 4064 or varget as they will fill the case a bit more and you can back down to 36 or 37 grains.
Have fun. Must be winter there just been around 100 F around here.

They worked well

In the end I went with 36gr Varget.

Primers were a little squared off - but I had only 1 stand, to a low body hit just in front of the back leg. I might go back 1/2 or 1 grain and try them.

Overall though I was really happy with how it went and how much milder it was than my previous 7-08.
