I settled on a 200gr Sierra or Hornaday RN bullet in a 357 mag or 38 spl brass with 7 gr of VV 3n38 at around 1050fps

Funny looking but people have a blast shooting it because it makes very little noise and recoil.

Next to all the 30-30's going off it sounds like a little fart


The first is 180gr Hornaday xtp, second is 200gr Sierra RN (both in 357 mag brass), third is 180gr Speer FN and fourth is 200gr Sierra again, but both in 38spl brass.

Fun to shoot, but you have to have good follow through (which I don't) or else you will be off target before the bullet leaves the barrel

How many seconds do you have to wait for the bullet to hit the ram?

probably 2 or 3 seconds, but feels more like 5 or 6 seconds.

You actually see the bullet slowly bounce off the target when it is done pushing it over!

What's the barrel's twist rate? Is it stabilizing those 200gr bullets pretty well?

That looks like just a courtesy crimp (just for looks) on the 357case w the 200 grain and the 180g and the 39sp case.

This is out of a Winchester 1892 (Japan), should be the standard, for them of, I think 1-18.5 or so.

Marlin's have a 1-16 twist , so they like the heavier bullets.

I think that is why they don't do so good with the light 110gr bullets like the Winchesters

This is from memory, so might not be exact numbers, but you get the idea.

Don't try this with a Rossi, they have a strange 1-30 twist.

They seem to be able to reliably shoot minute of Ram, and I tested a few on paper and they make round holes.

No extensive testing yet for accuracy.

Yes, lee factory crimp or taper crimp. Keeps if from hanging up on things.

I honestly think a heavy long barrel 44 mag or better a 44-40 would be the best for this job.

But I don't have one, so this is what I got.

Yeah I wasn't planning on trying it with my Rossi. I knew it wouldn't go well. I asked mostly out of curiosity honestly.

T's Rossi is actually shooting 158's pretty good BUT they need to be driven hard...

FWIW, 158 will give you a 80+% knock down rate.

That's better than I would have thought. I've historically shot the 125gr Rainier FNs, but since they're discontinued I've bought and loaded up some Xtreme 125gr FNs. Haven't shot them yet.

I've always shot the 30-30 in the big game. I want to make sure I knock over every animal I happened to have hit. lol

Trying this load in another rifle today, Cimmaron takedown model, just discovered it has a fast 1-14 twist like Colts.

Hopefully I can try it out in Arizona in a few weeks.

How did it go with the 200gr Hornadys and the Take Down?
I have some 200gr Cast coming, Not as happy with the Hornadys using the powders I have.
Mixing Jacketed and Cast data has been interesting.

I switched from 158gr FP Rainer's to 158gr FP Berry's last year when Rainer went out of business. I don't notice any significant difference in the bullet performance. Using 7.5gr of Unique light recoil and never fails to take down a ram.

Tim, I broke the ejector and had a little trouble with the all 357 mag last rounds getting hung up on the loading gate door.

other than that, worked well. I'm taking my normal Win 1892 to Arizona.
