I can testify besides being a naturally gifted athlete and highly intelligent, Dustin works twice as hard as anyone else I know of to shoot silhouette at the level he does. He earns those scores.

Last weeks Beaumont regional he won while shooting with a ear infection so bad he had to stuff cotton in and wear muffs instead of plugs.

In my experience, every time I’ve tried to finish off a perfect score, my mind takes over on the last few shots and I’m usually wondering who it is holding the rifle since that hold is a lot shakier than normal.

On the last shot, I had plenty of time so I told myself I was going to pass on any shot that wasn’t the perfect shot. I would sit there until I could break the shot exactly where I wanted it (which is not the way I teach people to do it and certainly not the best way to shoot silhouette but I was going to make sure and hit that last target!)

Whenever nerves take over, it’s uncomfortable to us so our brain tells us to get it over with as quickly as possible (that’s why we tend to rush the last shot on 5,10, 40, 80, in a row). I knew that was going to happen so the goal was to fight through that and be patient and get a really good trigger pull. Jerry (my spotter) gave me a small spot in the center of the target to aim at. I passed on the first three shots or so (again, not the way to do it!) then put it right on the spot and let it go.

I was relieved when it hit!

Congratulations! I know you've shot 40 several times, but that's the 1st I've heard of anyone shooting 40s in back-to-back matches on the same day!!

Keep up the good work - and send some of that mojo out to the rest of us mere mortals!!!
