Substitute for H4895?
What powder would you recommend for C,P, T? I have been using 24 gr of 4894 behind a 125 gr Sierra. Looking for mild recoil for the wife's CLA rifle. Have not seen 4895 for sale in two years and wondering what to try next. I have some 3031 that we use for rams, but not enough. Thanks!

Benchmark is pretty mild and gives a decent fill ratio.

Shooters World AR Plus is a perfect substitute for 3031. Burns clean too. Shooters World Match Rifle works also. Very close to 4895.
Different and not well known but great powders.

IMR 8208 XBR
Vitavuori 133
TAC
Reloader 10X or 12
IMR 3031 is actually a little faster powder than H4895, the IMR 8208 is also not temp sensitive very much like your H4895.

Re: Substitute for H4895?
We are seeing Accurate powders back on shelves here. LT-32 powder is not popular but it is very good. 5744 would work. Imr 4198 is also available in my area and it will work well when top speeds are not necessary. All these are faster burning than 4895.
I would advise against ball powders for mild 30-30 loads like the one you describe...maybe your load is in the 1800 fps range??

Re: Substitute for H4895?
Thanks for the ideas folks. I like 4895 because it is safe to make reduced loads with, was looking for something similar. My target is a very mild load in the 1700 fps range. The only full power loads we use are on rams.
I found some Accurate 2520. According to my burn chart it is right next to Varget and the starting load is 32 grains. That would be faster, and more recoil, than my 4895 load, correct?

Not that any powder is easy to find, but for the velocity range you're looking for, Bludot,4227, 2400, 5744,4198 AND RL7 work well.

I just checked the Hodgdon web site and Accurate 5744, Accurate 4064, and imr4227 are listed as 'available' FWIW

I've had good luck in testing with a 135gn Acme cast bullet over 11gn of Trail Boss. Runs a little over 1500fps and should work on everything but rams. Very light recoil.

I substituted 4064 when I couldn't find Varget. My impacts were inches lower for some reason with everything else being equal including velocity. No problem getting a new zero.

Re: Substitute for H4895?
To original post - try 15gr Lilgun under Sierra 125. Your wife will thank you. Excellent accuracy. Mild recoil. Burns clean. Lilgun is not position sensitive like many pistol powders so case filler is not required. I tested Lilguns dropped powder charge accuracy and it’s very consistent and within 1/10.
In case you wonder how I arrived at using this powder, I adopted a 30 carbine load from Hodgdons website. 30-30 case volume is greater so pressure would be lower than the carbine’s so I swapped 125gr bullet for the 110 and was stunned at 100 yd accuracy.

Correct, but you can safely try 28-30 grains and get a feel for your recoil.SqHunter wrote: ↑Sun Nov 07, 2021 2:56 am Thanks for the ideas folks. I would think that you would only get in trouble with "detonation" if you greatly reduced the load to like 10 to 20 grains with relatively slow powders.
If you have the ability to check your velocities, that would be useful.

30.0 grains of Varget with a Sierra 125 is what my wife and I shot on C-P-T. Not much recoil and the most accurate load I ever tested in a 30-30.

Re: Substitute for H4895?
That is what I shot till Varget vanished two years ago. My 1894 classic shot it like a target rifle! Would like something that recoils less though. 4895 was a good substitute because you can load it down, but it is no longer available. Not sure how to get reduced loads now.
thanks for the ideas folks, keep them coming!
