What is the best scope range is for a beginner, for an older shooter? A fixed power or a variable 3 to 9 or?? What are your suggestions? I mean what magnification?

Minimum 18x up top, GOOD turrets.

Reticle is up to you. Generally simple is best.

At minimum I think 12x works. Most use 20x+ when settled in. A Leupold 6.5-20x gives you that room to get use to the magnification and it's one of the most used scopes.

When I first started shooting silhouette I had a 3-9X scope on a Ruger 10/22. Quickly upgraded to a 4-16X right off the bat. After about a year I moved up to a 24X scope and that's where I've been since (for the most part).

As has been mentioned, a variable up to the 20X range is a really good place to start and will last longer before you max out and want more magnification. I'd look at fixed mag scopes when you know where you want to land.

Agree 3-9x
Too much scope is no good for a beginner.
Get decent with 9x then invest in big glass.
Less intimidation with less magnified wobble.
More important to be certain it tracks well. Returning to zero every time.

If you will be starting with a variable -
Your best bet is a 6 - 24 X or a 8 -32X …
I believe that Bausch & Lomb 6 - 24 X was about the
Best . Also Bushnell may have some available .
The Japanese glass of that B&L was outstanding !
Reticle to start - Duplex . You find your magnification
range … and then bracket your animals accordingly .
I can be almost as fast as a dot .
First focal plane vs Second focal plane conversions
Can be tricky and unsettling …
You will never use less than 6 X and you will never
Need more than 32 X .

You need a scope that gives you at least 8 or 9 minutes elevation, hopefully in one revolution.
