3.17 Ammunition

Post by 375Short »

Is a slug a pellet?

Does anyone have experience / opinions on slugs v. Pellets as far as accuracy and general performance as an air rifle silhouette projectile?

Slugs are generally better for high-powered guns and don't do as well in moderately-powered guns. They're designed to push the speed/energy up there towards smallbore (22 LR) velocities and energies which is generally too much for air rifle silhouette targets.

It's not in the rules, but a good rule of thumb is 20 foot-pounds of energy. Most air rifle resettables are built to withstand that kind of energy but more than that and you might get into issues.

A slug is not a pellet. A slug is a bullet. AAFTA does not permit slugs for airgun field target. Some will argue the need or desire to use slugs but really you do not need them to shoot silo at a max of 45 yards or field target at a max of 55 yards.

I'd not want more than 20fpe shooting the targets we have, and that's very borderline for getting a slug to perform unless it's one of the lighter .177

Honestly any gun that can drive a slug will have almost no drift at silhouette distances.
I'd be curious to try a slug gun on RF targets though.

Slugs are not legal in air rifle silhouette.
