Lyman front sight availability....????

Post by Jetmugg »

Does anyone have insight about what's been going on at Lyman over the last couple of years?

Front sight availability from them has been nearly impossible for the commonly used 17AMI and/or AUG front sights.

Last year, I was able to pick up a used 17 AMI, but now find myself in the market for another one (treated myself to another new rifle).

Any information / insight would be appreciated. Raw material shortages are a thing of the past, so that explanation doesn't work in 2023 or 2024.

I have a taller sight on back order since last year.

They said in November that it would ship by the end of the year... still no sight.

I had to resort to buying a used one on Ebay.

If the AMI is the lowest sight (.404?), I think I have an extra, let me know if you need me to ship to you.

Thank you - yes, I'm "watching" one on Ebay right now.

The 17 AMI is the model I'm looking for (0.494" height).

17 AHB is the "shorty" at 0.404".

I always have trouble keeping the part #'s and heights correct in my mind.

Here is an option, though an expensive one.
I put a Lyman 17AHB on a Marlin 39A just after Christmas. Ordered it from Midway USA with no problem. So I just looked around to see what you were talking about. ( this can't be right) WOW.
Is Lyman making sights for the military? I can't see a valid reason why the 17A series of sights would be "out of stock with no backorder" everywhere.

There are also a few used on Ebay if you want to look.

Good luck, life jus keeps getting weirder and weirder.....

The Lee Shaver 17 series can be an option.

Good call.... At least the Lee Shaver sights are available. The price is higher, but when has that really mattered to any of us????

I'm in the manufacturing business as well. I manage a company of 125 employees over 3 shifts, making products from US made steel, with US citizen employees.

Anyone still blaming covid for their inability to make products or hire people isn't trying hard enough.

I recently purchased one of the Lee Shaver front sights and find them to be of very good quality. He also offers them in Heights not available through Lyman, also with spirit levels.

Thanks - that's good to know. I'm currently "experimenting" with a Zander fiber-optic front sight, but not confident that it's the right front sight solution for me.

I was hoping to shoot the same lever rifle(s) all season without making any changes, but as always, I'm daydreaming about making my setup a little bit different/better.

The Lee Shaver front sight seems like a good solution, at least until Lyman gets their own issues solved. If Lyman can't solve their own manufacturing / inventory / distribution issues, then Lee Shaver should be an even better solution.
