38-55 from 30-30

Post by 375Short »

As the 38-55 brass shortage seems to be taking root it’s a good time to mention completely functional 38-55 brass can be had from not scarce 30-30 brass. I’m sure 95% of this forum knows that but maybe helpful to others. Run a well lubed piece of 30-30 brass into a 38-55 or .375 Winchester die and presto you got brass. It does come out a tad short which is no more complicated than seating your bullet out farther until your rifle is happy feeding it. Across the 38-55 family there are so many variables in chambers and bores that the brass length is just another piece of the puzzle for your particular rifle.

Many 38-55 shooters are also cast bullet shooters which makes the brass length even easier to solve. When you have your bullet of choice and you’re loaded, over all reliable feeding cartridge length established (best to use dummy rounds during this phase). If need or desire , trim the brass until it arrives at a place on the bullet suitable for crimping. Assuming you keep the same overall loaded cartridge length, established earlier, the brass length can be adjusted to suit the bullet without effecting case capacity.
