Adjustment Range Leupold 30x Sil v. EFR, and help requested

Folks,
I replied to a question about Leupold's 30x Silhouette scope, but doubt I will get enough play there to get an answer to my question. So here it is, if you don't mind a short read.
You may need to be aware of something I just found out the hard way. I took my 30x off of my 1712 and placed it on my latest toy, a 54.18MS, using a scope rail from Champion's and my normal Millet steel rings. This setup is identical to my 54.18MSR with 6.5x20EFR Leupold. Except for one thing: The 30x Silhouette only has 40MOA of reticle adjustment. The 6.5x20EFR has 50MOA. All of which means that if I shoot my standard RWS Rifle ammo, I run out of elevation adjustment on the single shot 54.18, while the 54.18 repeater has extra and is dead on with a few MOA to spare, all at 100 Meters. I took the cheap route out of a bad deal today, reached in the old ammo bag and drug out Federal 711B, which has enough of a higher trajectory over the RWS to be on the bullseye at 100 Meters.
Can someone tell me the best solution to this problem (easiest solution)? Do I need to shim the rear ring, or take the scope rail off and mount the scope directly to the rifle? Any knowledgeable help would be greatly appreciated. Of course, I already had a new EFR ordered from Chicken George, but I will run into the same problem again. Your kind assistance is appreciated
Thanks much!
Amanda

Amanda, is always recommended that you set your scope on the rifle so that the reticle is centered in other words you should have about the same adjustments on the windage and also elevation. And to do that you some times have to shim the scope mount or put a shim on the rear ring under the scope if you do not have enough elevation. There are rings and mounts that you can order that have the adjustments needed built in. Marvin Pearson from Washington makes some of the best and all you have to do is tell him for what action and what height you need. If I was you I would buy a collimator so that you can check your adjustments at home when you install the scopes that way you will not be surprised at the rifle range. Some times when scopes are installed incorrectly and the adjustments are way off center their function can be very erratic. I hope this helps you. Tony Tello

Amanda, Mr. Ringer is correct. The shim is the easiest and Mr. Pearson makes excellent rings. Other choices are B-Square #10101 and Burris Signature Z-rings with offset ring inserts. Also Wayne Merrier from Brunswick, Ga. sells offset bases that you can put your steel Millet rings on so you can make windage adjustments external from the scope ( this is the one I use). You can get rings with cant built in from BKL, but you'll find lots of complaints about their delivery time because they are a custom shop item. Anyone of these setups are praised by their owners and have seen many thousands of rounds of use. I too had trouble with the scope rail from Champion's. When I mounted it on my 1712, the recoil lug bent the front of the rail up so I was beyond my scopes adjstment range. When the scope is properly centered you should only need 7-9 moa adjustment to go from chickens to rams. If you go to the home page and then to Equipment, there is an article that explains this. Hope this gives you a good starting point.

Try reversing the rings and see if any of the offset is in the rings themselves.....

I'm sorry Amanda. The articles about slope are under the heading "Hardware" not Equipment on the Homepage.

Get the Burris Signature Z rings with the offset inserts or use one of the other ring/base solutions with built in elevation. The shim will result in a nice ring rash on your scope since the scope will no longer be parallel with the whole thru the rings.

Thanks folks! The thin plastic business card shim worked well. I also contacted Mr. Pearson for a set of his canted base/rings. Thanks for the help.......Amanda
