Dual Purpose Budget Build?

Money's short, Times are hard...

My evil brother (Hi Max!) has me half way convinced to go feral hog hunting, but my Stiller 6.5x47 seems like a poor choice and his preference of the 6.5 SPC is, at best, dicey as a backup Silhouette rifle. Never mind that the budget is lean so an off the shelf production rifle seems like the best bet - it can get trued & tuned later when things loosen up.

Preferences run toward a soft recoil Remington 700 action (a 7-08 BDL is the easy answer), but since this is me, nothing is off the table, including Savage and TC. Thoughts (please keep profanity BTB)?

Here we go again... I like the looks of the new TC Icon's (limited calibers though) and they say the Savage's have come a long way and have great triggers, so it's a flip of the coin and what shoulders best for you BB.... I know this will hurt you, but I've been hearing reports on sloppy work and accuracy from the stock off the shelf Remington's.

You're confusing OCD with blind faith. And I've heard the same thing about 700's for several years and know of it personally in some of their other products... They seem to build gunsmith ready rifles anymore.

I'll give you an easy out on this one....Borrow my Ruger 1B Tropical in 45-70, already tuned and loads standing ready or my Savage 110 in .338 Win Mag, also loaded and ready to go...The Ruger has a Paychamer Decelerator recoil pad on it and it's a pussycat to shoot...kinda....but it's a guaranteed hog killer.

You are taking away his rationalization of buying a new gun, John. Though I know your intentions were good here, you're tarnishing my image of you being the drug dealer that gets everyone to buy more guns and things to go with them. :)

Jason, Jason, Jason...You know me better than that.....What I didn't disclose is that both these beauties are for sale or trade for a 6.5X47 barrelled Stiller Tac 30 action...

You ask for the whole two cents, so you'll get it. In the past 14-15 years that I have worked the sight in service that the club at Ben Avery range provides to the once a year shooters, I have found that the gun that shoots best right out of the box is a Savage. Tikka used to be right up there also, but I haven't seen one in a couple of years. They are about butt ugly, but they do what they are supposed to do!

Couple good dogs and a knife should work well with a tight budget.

That should say "a couple good dogs, a knife, and a video camera" there. If you go after a wild hog with a knife, BB, please make sure that someone gets it on video. :)

Shouldn't be a problem for a former Marine to leave the dogs at home and go without the Arkansas toothpick!
